Model Plane Pentagon Bomb Plot Man Charged
An American man has been charged with plotting to fly remote-control aircraft filled with explosives into the Pentagon.
Rezwan Ferdaus, 26, is also accused of attempting to supply materials to help al Qaeda attack American soldiers overseas.
He allegedly boasted about attacking the Pentagon with small drone planes filled with explosives and guided by GPS equipment.
The plot was allegedly later widened to include an attack on the Capitol, which would have been followed with a ground assault using automatic weapons.
The US Justice Department says Ferdaus, a physics graduate, was held after months of surveillance by undercover agents posing as accomplices.
US Attorney Carmen Ortiz said in a statement: "The conduct alleged today shows that Mr Ferdaus had long planned to commit violent acts against our country."
Authorities stressed the public had never been in danger because the explosive devices were controlled by undercover FBI workers.
If convicted, Ferdaus faces up to 15 years in jail for supporting terrorists and 20 years for attempting to destroy the Pentagon and Capitol buildings.
The graduate, from Ashland, Massachusetts, allegedly started planning a violent "jihad" against the US in early 2010, calling Americans "enemies of Allah".
He allegedly modified mobile phones to trigger the bombs and then supplied them to the undercover FBI agents who he believed were members of or recruiters for al Qaeda.
The affidavit claimed he was "gratified" in June 2011 when told the first detonation device had killed three US soldiers and injured four or five others in Iraq.
Authorities said the 26-year-old had visited Washington to examine his targets and take photographs, picking out a spot where he would launch the attack.
He allegedly gave undercover agents, posing as his accomplices, detailed plans with step-by-step instructions.
A remote-controlled aircraft, ordered under the alias Dave Winfield, was delivered to Ferdaus' storage unit last month, according to the affidavit.
He was arrested after allegedly receiving a haul of weapons from the undercover agents, including explosives, grenades and AK-47 assault rifles.
Ferdaus, who is being held without bail, did not enter a plea at an initial court hearing. A detention hearing has been set for Monday.Sky News – 14 minutes ago
