Penates were in Roman mythology house gods in the household and the storeroom. They were worshipped at the hearth by giving them little pieces of the meal.
As symbols families used little images of the deity.
They were considered souls of died ones being close to families. Even in case a family moved, Penates moved with them.
And also publicly there was Penates worship in Roman times.
Now let us ask about modern Penates. Are there deity like figures being used in our time?
Photographic images
pics all around the house, in necklasses, house altars, hidden places, albums, posters of stars
Religious symbols
crosses in the house, Bible, Jesus pics, angel pics, church pics, satanic pics, etc.
Remains of loved ones
remaining arrangement or style of the house like grandma used to love it, no change of order in dead moms wardrobe, clocks, personal items, letters etc.
Stories often being told
history of family, stories from uncle Joe, stories of dead, war stories etc.
Tradition keeping
son follows grandfather in profession, marriage in same family, observance of special days etc.
These points alone show our deep involvement in very old religious structures. We have not really much evolved from Roman times.
The most contemporary religious item we use in Penates like manner is our iPhone device. Without it we feel not really blessed.
Ridicules, right?
