The intarwebs are a buzz with this:

I'm sure this filament will calmly sink back into the chronosphere. Move along people, nothing to see.

And how can you be sure, when the scientists even can't tell for sure? They are monitoring this filament for seven days now a new sunspot appeared today.

It's also possible this will sink back again, but history tells us it could also explode.

The only thing what this thread is about is keeping focus on this occurrence. So I find your statement a bit naive to think this will just disappear. Because nobody knows for sure!

I see my sarcasm eludes you.

In anycase, be prepared to unplug/power off the electronics you want to keep if you're at home, eventhough we probably wouldn't have the generators to run them if it actually came to that, unless you're a religious survivalist like those timebomb2000 boys.

Well the biggest solar flare which wiped out the power of an entire city happened in 2003 and was a flare of somewhat 350.000 km. This one is already stretching a 1.000.000 km, so I'm not sure it will only damage our electronics.

Also NASA wants to predict these solar storms, because they can switch off the power supply, to prevent any damage.

The Sun is unpredictable in its cycle and it still is very active considering the possible hyder flare which still can occur.

It's still there and growing, so we're not on the safe zone yet. Hyder Flares doesn't occur very often and when it happens it will be a humongous event.

I had a concern as this is supposed to be the most lengthy. Presumably the largest in every parameter filament. I understand the major concern is for the assumed subsequent Hyder Flare. It appears to me this puppy is trying to "get off the chain". If it is the largest ever studied do we really know what its course will take? I hope it doesn't have the power to get out of the suns gravitational forces! Yikes :ohno:

This one works.

It snapped indeed

The event did not produce a bright solar flare, as sometimes happens when filaments erupt, but there was a coronal mass ejection (CME). SOHO coronagraphs observed at least one and possibly as many as three clouds billowing away from the sun: movie. If any of this material is heading for Earth--a big unknown!--it should arrive on Feb. 27th or 28th

Get your camera's ready and don't forget to shut off your electronics. You never know :?

Here's the latest pic from SOHO

And again they try to hide something

But at least the Sun is has calmed down for now!

As far as I can conclude these CME's wont be of any danger for Earth.

An approaching CME won’t be seen by our satellites, until its close by, so we don't know for sure.

But I would suggest to you all, you can all go to sleep nice and safe......for NOW!!!!
