A high intensity earthquake in Myanmar has killed at least 41 people and injured more than 90 according to radio announcements from Myanmar. There are also reports of houses, government buildings and Buddhist monasteries getting damaged.
The quake happened in north eastern Myanmar, measuring 7 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the quake was detected north of Tachileik region along the Thai border. However tremors were felt hundreds of kilometers, as far as Bangkok the capital of Thailand and the Vietnamese capital Hanoi.
The present death tolls announced by sources from Myanmar are estimates and the toll is expected to be much higher in course of assessment of damage.

The quake has triggered landslides and collapsed buildings in Tachileik and Tarpin region, leaving more than 50 dead and more than 90 injured. Myanmar’s state TV reports of 244 houses, 14 monasteries and 9 government buildings getting destroyed.
There is a lot of panic due to the recurrent number aftershocks that are being felt in Myanmar and Thailand. Seismological experts in Myanmar reported 56 aftershocks below 5.0 magnitude and six aftershocks above the magnitude of 6.
On the other hand seismological bureau from Thailand reported some 60 aftershocks in northern Chiangmai province.
Further the seismological bureau believes that the aftershocks are expected to continue for a week with different magnitudes ranging from 3.0 to 5.0, but no greater than 6.0 magnitudes.
