Tunisian residents have a new beach to visit -- right in the middle of the desert.

Locals were astounded when a lake appeared recently in a drought-stricken area. They've since named the miraculous sight "Gafsa Beach" for its location within a region of the same name in southern Tunisia.

The mysterious body of water, which observers estimate covers an area of about 2.6 acres and measures more than 50 feet at its deepest points, seems to have emerged right from the Earth. While officials investigating how the lake formed still do not know the source of the water, the running theory is that a tremor fractured a layer of rock holding an underground reservoir, according to French-language reports. The groundwater would have then flowed through a crack in the rock and filled the canyon over a period of time.

After the lake was discovered earlier this month, Gafsa's public safety office warned visitors to avoid swimming in the waters, since officials had yet to confirm the safety of the mysterious body of water. Some speculated that the water could be harmful to humans or, possibly, carcinogenic since there is phosphate mining in the region.

However, that has not stopped locals from enjoying their newfound beach.

Maybe this is the second coming of the flood. Well it is a conspiracy site

And the waters prevailed exceedingly on the earth, and all the high hills under the whole heaven were covered.
I question everything. I don't believe anything I'm told or anything I see. Prove it, or fuck off. And that's not me I see in the mirror in the morning.

hmmm I reckon the translation/narration is bogus.. If you look at the lake at the 1.45 mark you can see the circular section that the water would have carved out over time... right? I dont think anything appeared overnight apart from a few hot and bothered folks taking a cool dip....

The plantation surrounding the lake have almost the same growth line. This is a clear sign that it's not the first time this plant lived next to water. Some of this bushes look at least 4-5 YO. Oasis can be watery for a few years, then get dry for few years ,then-watery again. for the desert people it's a natural thing, and a very happy time to see the water back.
A real success can be achieved only if you help everybody else to fail.

43min ago fox news just reported on this :

Mysterious lake appears in drought-stricken Tunisia

For residents of Tunisia desperate to beat the heat, we've got some really good news and some really bad news. The good is that shepherds in a drought-stricken region near the city of Gafsa stumbled upon an amazing thing: a brand-new lake that surfaced in an otherwise barren territory, reports News.com.au.

It's spectacular, with rocks perfect for diving and water up to 65 feet deep, which is why hundreds of people have been flocking daily to so-called "Gafsa Beach" since it was discovered three weeks ago.

Oh, but the bad news: The water might kill you. "This lake is located in an area rich in phosphate deposits, which leave residue that is sometimes strongly radioactive," warns a report in Tunisia Daily by Lakhdar Souid, as quoted in the Times of India.

"So there is a real risk the water is contaminated and carcinogenic." It's also a little worrisome that it's gone from clear blue to hazy green, "meaning that the water is stagnant and conducive to diseases," says Souid.

Last week, the government warned that the lake was unfit for swimming, reports France24, but it did not put an official ban into place as testing continues.

No word yet on how the lake formed, but one theory is that some kind of seismic activity—perhaps related to the local phosphate mining industry—jolted the water table.

yahoo india news just reported on it :

A mysterious lake has appeared in middle of the Tunisian desert and has instantly become a tourist attraction.
The stretch of water, dubbed the Lac de Gafsa, appeared like a mirage; one minute there was nothing but scorching sand, the next a large expanse of turquoise water, The Guardian reported.
A Tunisian journalist said that in the first few days, the water was crystal clear; a turquoise blue. Now it's green and full of algae, which means it's not being replenished.
He said that this region is overflowing with large deposits of phosphate, which can leave behind radioactive residue so there is a real risk that the water is contaminated and carcinogenic. There's no security of any kind.
The journalist added that the site is certainly stunning and there are many large rocks perfect for diving, but it has become infested with green algae, meaning the water is stagnant and conducive to diseases.
