I was looking at the Mars anomaly research site hosted by JP skipper,http://www.marsanomalyresearch.com/index.htm where he mentioned that NASA's iconic "Blue marble" image suffered from significant image tampering, now i know this guy can get a bit carried away with some of his reports so i had a look to see what he had found.

the red boxes show extensive use of the clone tool and act as guides for you t ocheck out the area on the original image in the link.

but , whats the point? why would they go to the trouble to doctor images of our own planet? we know what it looks like , surely? is there some thing in the pacific that were not to see, or have NASA become so paranoid abot hiding the truth that they cant let even an innocent picture go by without tampering with it. Nasa, whatever there reasoning, simply continue to show us that they cant be trusted with public information, nothing they tell us can be taken seriously, i cant help but wonder sometimes if there realy is a space program!

Well, i'll be damned.

You are totally correct.
All good examples of cloning. its evident in the large image. lots of it.

And look, i hate to say this, but since this type of stuff really has been a good part of my career, i CAN see someone giving the order to either clean up a bad data spot or something.

And the only way to really draw an ethical line, is to categorize the image.

If it is editorial, then no retouch whatsoever is allowed.
IF it is to be used as a PR image, sold or used in a commercial manner...then i can see retouch on a particularly unsightly portion being ordered.

But even so, they would have to know beforehand what sort of scrutiny it would draw, and what conclusions would be drawn from it, and the retouch looks bad...in that sense.

But my vote would go to bad data or unsightly glitch being removed, as opposed to something secret being hidden, but they removed that ability to discern, so i have to say it was a sorta bad move.


OR at least publish the untouched original...
and say this is what we cleaned up, and why.
