Sitting back and taking it all in rather than focusing on stuff you know nothing about seems more enjoyable to me. Im sure Magik is much more involved than just following some formula... What do you expect to get out of it anyway? Just curious...
Im just gonna observe as that to me seems like the most important thing any of us could do. We are here to gather experience imo, so thats all i need to do.
Its just the earth casting a shadow on the moon for a couple hours...

The winter solstice also played an important role in Greco-Roman rituals.
"It's seen as a time of rebirth or renewal because, astrologically, it's a time where the light comes back," said Shane Hawkins, a professor of Greek and Roman studies at Carleton University in Ottawa.
For the ancient Romans, it was also a time of great feasting and debauchery.
"If (the eclipse) happened on the 21st, they might well have been drunk," he said.

Experience is never a waste of time, but seeing as your asking and are looking to take advantage of this auspicious occurance, you can try a little meditation with some focused intention work. For my part, Im using this event to charge and program various crystal/stone spheres I bought as Christmass presents for friends/family with specific intentions for each one, paired with the proper stone. In example, for one of my nieces is an amethyst charged with spiritual protection, and for my mother (who has stress/sleep issues) a scolecite orb for sernenity and restfulness. Lots of fun stuff you can do if you want to, Knob. Imagination is the heart of magic. Go with your intuition.

Let your past go and be in the moment, the past only exists in your head and is exclusive to you. No spells, no magic just sense. The universe will do the rest! Happy solstice!
