As for the cheese on the continent, I would think yes is the answer to that, unless the country has a modicum of sense and bans BurgerKing/MacDonalds uses of it because they have it in their products.

I have to admit I'm a little leery about Dutch gals.

I had a friend - an American - who told me once: "Never marry a Dutch woman".

He was a great Jazz trombone player I met in New Orleans. I was interested in moving to Europe and considering landing in Holland, and so I was asking him questions about living there...

He was married to a Dutch woman, and I didn't understand what he meant until, first: she came to New Orleans and dragged him back to Holland.

Okay, I could understand that. He married her and had a responsibility towards her and the children she already had.

He had kids in the States and gigs there, so I also understood why he was torn.

I met her when she came to fetch him and she seemed very nice, though he had a terrified look in his eyes when she showed up.

I ended up, indeed, moving to Holland and stayed there 7 years (much longer than I had planned). I talked to this guy a few times but never got to actually see him or play with him again. His wife made him take on 2 jobs - one as a postman during the day, and another driving a Super de Boer truck at night (Super de Boer is the equivalent of an American supermarket chain).

She forbade him to smoke weed (which he dearly loved to do), and would only let him play good-paying gigs (which I could never offer him - trombone players are the last to get hired...).

Anyway, I started to understand what he meant when he said to never marry a Dutch girl.

What I saw and experienced while in the Netherlands was this: people don't marry young - and that's a good thing, in my estimation.

But when they do, the wives are SERIOUS. There's no easy "well-it-didn't-work-out" American-style divorces, or an amicable parting of the ways. Dutch wives will hunt you down to the ends of the earth and drag you back home, because when they marry - they do it for keeps.
