Proof once again that we know so little about the universe that what seemed to be a gimme is now in question.

A supernova is supposed to be the most energetic event in the universe. To say something went supernova means something was destroyed in a violent release of energy. This is the moment blackholes come into existence.

Now they find that not all supernovae are as violent nor do they all release massive amounts of energy.

Instead of rethinking what a supernova is and realizing that there might be more than one way for certain things to happen they will just keep them all grouped together as supernovae no matter their energy output.
