Alien hunter ... Dr Alan Penny

ALIEN hunters are building a brand new array of telescopes to launch a co-ordinated search for little green men.

Astronomers across the UK and Europe are joining forces in a bid to finally end the search for extra-terrestrial life.

It is hoped the network of listening stations will pick up broadcasts from distant civilisations on planets orbiting nearby stars.

Engineers are still building a collection of 44 radio telescopes in Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and France — so far 21 have been completed.

The pan-European network — called the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) — will map the universe at very low wavelengths.

Prime targets for the telescopes will be pulsars, galaxies and mini-black holes where alien civilisations could once have transmitted signs of life.

Research body SETI (the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) will listen in with LOFAR to the low-frequency end of the radio spectrum — similar to tuning a radio to one end of the band.

They will need to filter out interference from radio transmitters here on Earth — but what's left could prove alien life does exist.

Dr Alan Penny, from St Andrews University in Scotland, said scientists will be able to tell which signals could only be made by intelligent life.

He said: "LOFAR will scan nearby stars searching for radio emissions which could only be produced by artificial means - a sign that there is a civilisation there and that we are not alone.

"Previous investigations of these stars have concentrated on higher frequencies but, as we do not know at which frequencies an extraterrestrial civilisation might choose to emit radio waves, LOFAR will fill an important gap in the search."

that is very interesting ,i often wonder if in fact we have already got a answer, perhaps a pod or a probe sent out with a message contained in it , and have not found it yet , its a big planet an alot of things could be sent here and never found .just a thought .
