Newspaper Rock State Historic Monument is located some 25 miles (40 km) north and west of Monticello and south and west of Moab in eastern Utah, western United States. The Monument features a flat rock with one of the largest known collections of petroglyphs.
The petroglyphs were carved by Native Americans during both the prehistoric and historic periods. Some glyphs depict riders on horses. While precisely dating the rock carvings has been difficult, repatination of surface minerals reveals their relative ages. The reason for the large concentration of the petroglyphs is unclear, making the rock somewhat of a mystery.
The location is near a stream and trail in an area with long expanses of otherwise impassable vertical cliffs. The carved face is located along State Route 211, the access road to Canyonlands National Park Needles District. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newspaper_ ... c_Monument

Newspaper Rock State Historical Monument, Utah
Newspaper Rock is a petroglyph panel etched in sandstone that records approximately 2,000 years of early man's activities. Prehistoric peoples, probably from the Archaic, Basketmaker, Fremont and Pueblo cultures, etched on the rock from B.C. time to A.D. 1300. In historic times, Utah and Navajo tribesmen, as well as Anglos, left their contributions.

There are no known methods of dating rock art. In interpreting the figures on the rock, scholars are undecided as to their meaning or have yet to decipher them. In Navajo, the rock is called "Tse 'Hane' " (rock that tells a story). Unfortunately, we do not know if the figures represent story telling, doodling, hunting magic, clan symbols, ancient graffiti, or something else. Without a true understanding of the petroglyphs, much is left for individual admiration and interpretation.

Newspaper Rock, Petrified Forest
These petroglyphs, pecked into these rocks allow a glimpse of the life and world of the people who farmed the Puerco River Valley 650 to 2,000 years ago. More than 650 rock art designs--the largest concentration of petroglyphs in Petrified Forest National Park--adorn the boulders that tumbled to rest below the cliffs above.

The dark coating on the rock, called desert varnish presented an inviting opportunity for creativity. Ancient artists produced many types of figures and patterns by carefully pecking the coated rock surfaces with sharpened tools to remove the desert varnish and expose the lighter rock beneath.

What do the petroglyphs mean? No one knows for sure. We know that petroglyph styles change over time, but their meaning remains a mystery. Even so, petroglyphs provide a valuable resource for studying past cultures.

Great post...I love all ancient mysteries
I wonder why most of the "footprints" have 6 toes

Petroglyphs, first discovered, are breathtaking. Horseback and hiking for days, to find the most secluded canyons. Discovering the niches in the canyon walls where a man had once been long before, but not since. Finding their gindstones, matata's and mono's just as they had left them, undisturbed for so long. It makes the endeavor all worthwhile.
We have many of these here in New Mexico. But the best are on private land, large ranches, undisturbed by vandals. I had tons of pics of them, that unfortunately were not backed up to disk, and lost in a crash. I'll revisit the sites this summer. I have only some samples of the areas, and geology of the region. These pics are too large to post here, so I'll just post links, instead of re-sizing.

Hesop, respectfully, sweeping canyon vistas are not petroglyphs. And the few pictures of human make there, still likely made by '60's spiritualists or whatnot.

Harbin...respectfully....read what I typed.
So, you are trying to say that some 1960's era hippy made the petroglyphs'?
I don't want to assume here.
I have discovered personally, first hand, formerly unknown sites, and at the landowners request, guided some State researchers back to the sites. They were all authenticated.
