That's true, but the technology is evolving pretty quickly. A decade ago the glide ratio was barely 1:1, now it's 2.5-3:1. I think that, with ankle-mounted jets, true flight might be obtainable...of course you'd have to develop a stabilizer to suppress yaw.

Plus a bird strike could be fatal at the speed these things fly.

Yeah, they are also working on advancing towards landing without, now necessary, parachutes.
It'll happen. This has been a fairly rapidly evolving sport. So cool.

and.. yeah, I would think that even trying to quickly avoid a bird strike could prove to be fatal.
