Here is the reference:
World English Bible
"You shall not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth (Exodus 20:4)...".
An idol is a kind of image.
An image is a concept according an idea.
Truth is at first that what happens.
Our brain is a truth filter - therefore we speak of perception first.
After perception our brain is interpreting. Perception and interpretation goes hand in hand.
A truth interpretation is not simply one with the plain truth - there is always a difference.
Perception + interpretation produces a first degree distorted image - in this regard an distortion of truth.
This is the price of being a separated being from other beings. Maybe this is also an illusion, but it appeares that way.
From there we might not be able getting any closer touch to a plain truth.
I spoke of first degree distortion, but our brain might not stop here.
Interpretation is also a thought machine.
A thought is an additional filter - it transcends an interpretation giving it a solid form.
A thought as solid form not only interpretes a perception but starts avoiding a perception.
Avoiding a perception means, parts of a perception are ignored because there is already a thought.
This is the point - in favor of the thought a perception is not able to unfold what it wanted to unfold originally or intentionally.
The thought has become stronger than perception.
Now thought and interpretation interpret in favor of the thought - this is the main reason of setting up an image.
The flowchart is not: perception - interpretation - conclusion but rather: thought - perception - thought - interpretation - thought - conclusion.
Examples:
You have an image of a person and wonder if he / she is being or acting differently.
You have an image of Jesus and make him a member of your class, race, tribe, imagination etc. and can't understand the happening of his efficiency, the same with what you call "God".
You have an image of a human you believe to love and wonder if ot's over - suddenly he / she was "the wrong partner" - actually you loved the image you had from this person.
You have an image of what you call Aliens and miss waching on what it means being human.
You had a bad experience , say with a black dude and claim all blacks are bad.
You had a divine experience and believe all humans must have your insight.
I find it important knowing our thoughts and how they interfer the process of perception.
Of course we are not able simply to avoid or to steer our thoughts. Positive thinking is at least a nice try but a big betrayal.
It could better start with simply waching our thoughts and knowing what really happens. The old commandment is really a deep insight...

Anybody who knows Paul Watzlawick should remember the story of the hammer. This is a good example of keeping a thought rather than following perception:
A man wants to hang a painting. He has the nail, but not the hammer. Therefore it occurs to him to go over to the neighbor and ask him to lend him his hammer. But at this point, doubt sets in. What if he doesn't want to lend me the hammer? Yesterday he barely spoke to me. Maybe he was in a hurry. Or, perhaps, he holds something against me. But why? I didn't do anything to him. If he would ask me to lend him something, I would, at once. How can he refuse to lend me his hammer? People like him make other people's life miserable. Worst, he thinks that I need him because he has a hammer. This is got to stop ! And suddenly the guy runs to the neighbor's door, rings, and before letting him say anything, he screams: "You can keep your hammer, you bastard"
