A poacher has been eaten by a lion in South Africa's Kruger Park, officials said on Wednesday.

Rangers said the man was apparently devoured by the beast after being injured when he was chased by a pack of wild hippos as he tried to illegally hunt wildlife in the world famous reserve.

He was reported missing last week by two alleged fellow poachers, who managed to escape the hippos.

Officials who searched the area where the attack happened later discovered part of a human skull and pieces of ripped clothing.

Laura Mukwevho, a spokesman for South African National Parks, said the group had been setting snares when they were cornered by the animals.

She said: "What we have heard from those who survived suggests this was a vicious attack by wild animals.

"It appears the man was chased by hippos. We assume he must then have been eaten by lions.

"It is impossible to say whether he was alive or dead by the time the lions got to him."

The victim of the lion attack has not yet been named but officials indicated he was a local man.

Kruger National Park is one of the world's largest and best-known game reserves.

I met a lion once at the zoo. I asked him what was his favourite meal, he said, "Finch, Chimps and Mushy Bees. (Thats a joke for the Brits).

One More,

The Christians are tied around their waists to posts on the last day of the games in the Roman Amphitheatre and the Lions are released. As the lions started charging toward them one of the Christian leaders put is hands together and looking toward the heavens shouted, "Please God have mercy and turn these lions into Christians". On that there was deathly silence all around and the Lions stopped in their tracks and sat down. Putting their paws together they looked up and one said, "For what we're about to receive may the Lord make us truly thankful"
