A police officer was yesterday accused of seven counts of rape and a string of sexual offences.
PC Stephen Mitchell, 41, appeared in court facing 43 charges for offences against 19 women.
All the women are believed to have been suspects in police inquiries, some of them addicted to drugs or homeless.
The offences are alleged to have taken place between 1999 and 2007, while Mitchell was serving with Northumbria Police.
The officer was arrested on Monday night after an investigation by the force's professional standards department in conjunction with the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
He was suspended from duty after the investigation was launched.
After the allegations first emerged, one of his colleagues said: 'When we heard the news of what had happened, we were stunned.'
Mitchell appeared at Newcastle Magistrates' Court yesterday charged with seven offences of rape, 17 of indecent assault and 19 of misconduct in a public office.
The officer, wearing a black hooded top, white T-shirt and jeans, spoke only to confirm his name, age and address.
The IPCC said yesterday the investigation remained 'ongoing' and asked anyone with relevant information to contact Northumbria Police.
Mitchell was arrested on Monday night at his parents' home in Glasgow, but the court heard it was not possible to bail him to that address as its jurisdiction only covered England and Wales.
He was therefore remanded in custody until today to enable his solicitor to arrange a suitable alternative.
A police spokesman said: 'A Northumbria Police officer has today been charged with a number of serious sexual offences and misconduct in a public office.
'PC Mitchell, who has served at Newcastle and Northumberland area commands, was taken to a police station in Northumbria where he was charged this morning with 43 offences which are alleged to have taken place between 1999 and 2007.'
