On any given school day, kids who “act up” in class can be pinned facedown on the floor, locked in dark closets, tied up with straps, bungee cords and duct tape, handcuffed, leg shackled, tasered or otherwise restrained, immobilized or placed in solitary confinement in order to bring them under “control.” Certainly, as John Whitehead argues in this week's vodcast, the pathology that characterizes the American police state has passed down to the schools—and something needs to be done about it.

This really isn't new. When I was in school in the early 90's I was a bit of bad apple and ended up in schools for disruptive kids. In these schools you can be restrained--to death.

The U.S. Supreme Court was intended to be an institution established to intervene and protect the people against the government and its agents when they overstep their bounds. Yet, as John W. Whitehead points out in this week's vodcast, Americans can no longer rely on the courts to mete out justice. In the police state being erected around us, the police and other government agents can probe, poke, pinch, taser, search, seize, strip and generally manhandle anyone they see fit in almost any circumstance, all with the general blessing of the courts. The difference between what happened in Boston in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings and what is happening now in Ferguson, Missouri, is not in the government’s response but in the community’s reaction. Many Americans are now shocked at the tactics employed to quell citizen unrest—a massive SWAT team, an armored personnel carrier, men in camouflage pointing heavy artillery at the crowd, smoke bombs and tear gas. But as John W. Whitehead reveals in this week's video, 'we the people' have the power to stem the growth of the emerging police state. Copyright © 2014 The Rutherford Institute

If the United States is a police state, then the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is its national police force, with all the brutality, ineptitude and corruption such a role implies. In fact, although the DHS' governmental bureaucracy may at times appear to be inept and bungling, it is ruthlessly efficient when it comes to building what the Founders feared most—a standing army on American soil.

We have returned to a time before the American Revolution when government agents—with the blessing of the courts—could force their way into a citizen's home, with seemingly little concern for lives lost and property damaged in the process. At all levels, federal, local and state, the government and the police have merged. And in the process, they have become a standing army--which is exactly what the Founders feared. The question we must ask ourselves is how much more innocent blood will be shed before we take back control over our government, our communities and our lives?
