Not justifying it at all, but in the short-term it's better than ignoring it (in the long term). It's just sad that it was all a set up 50 years ago.

thou maketh good points

but what if all the efforts over the past 50 yrs or so were directed at longterm stability trough educational, socio & economical help programs instead of continious fear mongering, undermining existing governments, replacing dictators with a "better" one ( shit i'm coughing so loud slime is flying all around my room ) etc..

i bet you shit would be different.

Point is... as sensitive a problem it is to admit that the US is helping the rebels, the fact of the matter is that if they didn't help or make some kind of showing (to the rebels), then there is no way the US would gain any sort of credentials or control over the decision of "who's gonna run Damascus" when Assad is out. Yeah, it's the same $hitty complaint we've heard for 70 years about the CIA, but fact is, the dictators the US installs are still better than the fundamentalist nutbags who have filled in every other power vacuum in Africa and the Middle East in the last 20-some years. (Shame about Afghanistan though, but it was a cold war. :badair: )

Ibn Taymiyah once commented on a question once, on why in Islamic law Muslims were forbidden from rising against their rulers, even if the rulers were evil. And he replied, that when someone is a cause of or part of an uprising, in order to win, they must be worse than the ruler they are trying to overthrow.

WASHINGTON — A small number of C.I.A. officers are operating secretly in southern Turkey, helping allies decide which Syrian opposition fighters across the border will receive arms to fight the Syrian government, according to American officials and Arab intelligence officers.

http://www.rt.com/news/cia-officers-turkey-syria-378/

American secret service operatives are distributing illegal assault rifles, anti-tank rocket launchers and other ammunition to Syrian opposition, the New York Times reports. But due to some rebels’ links to Al Qaeda, the CIA’s task is precarious.
The paper reports that for weeks now, officers based in southeast Turkey have supervised the flow of illegal arms to numerous opposition factions ready to fight the regime of President Bashar Assad. The only problem is some of the rebel groups have links with terrorist organizations such as Al Qaeda, so the CIA mission must be careful not to arm proven terrorists by mistake.

not surprising.
