Bedroom tax ‘inspired by last Labour government’

Image
Housing Minister Don Foster told MPs the plans were a necessary check on the escalating cost of housing benefit.

The so-called "bedroom tax" was inspired by an identical policy created by the last Labour government, a Liberal Democrat minister has told the Commons.

Don Foster said plans to reduce housing benefit for households with one or more spare room was the same as a Labour policy imposed on private sector housing.

The Housing Minister said the plans were a necessary check on the escalating cost of housing benefit.

He said: "There are a very large number of properties that are currently under occupied. That will help enormously.

“(It is) a policy that is identical to the one that is adopted by the Labour government in respect of housing benefit being paid in the private rented sector.

"We are taking the advice of the Labour Party who said a year ago housing benefit is too high and we need tough minded reform."

But shadow minister Helen Jones said the policy would hit hard families with disabled children or service families keeping a spare room for a child deployed elsewhere.

She said: "You know those (homes) are not there so why don't you abandon this vindictive policy?"

Mr Foster replied: "The Government is well aware of these issues and that is why in relation to the disabled people you talk about we have placed an additional £25 million available to help, that's why in relation to carers we have made an additional £5 million.

"And could I say in relation to the Armed Forces, while the Armed Forces personnel is living at home, the home would have a £70 per week discount while the person is serving. That will only be the 14% discount, a very much lower sum of money."

How about we start a petition, i wrote a letter to the queen, anyone got any ideas how to start a petition, i've no idea, we should have a DTV movement, maybe its time we walked the walk....

Re- Stop the bedroom tax

To Her Majesty with respect, with you're role as head of state and because of you're endorsement of government policy, we feel that recent bedroom tax issue is grotesquely unjust and unfair and targets the most vulnerable people in society, we feel as head of state its only right you lead by example and like every council house holder in the UK it would be only right for you to also pay tax on every room you have available that is empty on you're properties , not only at Buckingham palace but also Windsor castle and the rest of you're properties laid out on you're vast estate, we have no doubt this would add up to a substantial amount of money and indeed money that out Government can put to good use in other countries for the continued war on terrorism.

Indeed the money raised would not go towards building new homes nor would it go towards immigration, which incidentally is a big part of the problem because when government has an open door policy on immigration they should also have the required needs to house those peoples that come in as a result of it, this is a big oversight on the governments part because simply they act in a most incompetent way so instead of building new homes to accommodate more people they chose instead to pick on the most vulnerable and pressure them through harsh taxes to either give up their homes they have lived in for many years or pay tax on all empty rooms in their house, so respectfully i reiterate my first sentiment and ask you in the name of helping out you're government to pay tax on all you're spare rooms on all you're properties.

Kind regards,

We The People

Bedroom tax, knocks me sick, the thing is to if you have pets and they want you to move they wont go out of their way to get you a property that can accommodate you're pets but what they will do is give you assistance finding the pet a home, yep a small area with bars..

the fact of the matter is they will keep bringing in more of these shameful taxes saying they need the money to reduce the deficit while all they while they are engaged in expensive wars that line the pockets of the rich, to be frank if the people really cared about these taxes they would get of their arses and protest it but because they don't do this in numbers they will just keep piling on the taxes, watch out for garden tax next, hey how about a tax for commercial properties for ever empty room they have to, where does it end

Bedroom tax.
only applies to those on benifits and not home owners (excluding those on benifits who have retired)

ie. three bedroom council house lived in for 5, 10, 20 years, children grown up moved out, you have a spair room. Heres just three of the council`s ideas,
1 take a lodger in (helps to pay the rent ? ...but you would have to pay all of it as you wouldnt be entitled to housing benefit)
2 move to smaller property (5, 10, 20 years of home emprovements, friends, family, social existence. Gone.)
3 cut down on other things to help pay the extra rent ........

What happens if you do move to a smaller property and then you decide to have another child ? ...... you move back to a bigger place :ohno:

Bedroom tax coming to an estate near you soon :flop:

(reminds me of window tax.... but that hit the richer people and we cannot be doing that :hell: )
