concrete wrote:Found the Vit D study. Done by Oregon State Uni.

In primates, this action of "turning on" an optimal response to microbial attack only works properly in the presence of adequate vitamin D, which is actually a type of hormone that circulates in the blood and signals to cells through a receptor. Vitamin D is produced in large amounts as a result of sun exposure, and is available in much smaller amounts from dietary sources.

Vitamin D prevents the "adaptive" immune response from over-reacting and reduces inflammation, and appears to suppress the immune response. However, the function of the new genetic element this research explored allows vitamin D to boost the innate immune response by turning on an antimicrobial protein. The overall effect may help to prevent the immune system from overreacting.

excellent concrete...this brings me to a conclusion that when we go on our hols to sunnier climes that is why we feel good everyday(unless you get the shits that is)due to the fact of fulfilling our exposure to the sun creating vitD,but here in the manchester uk we are lucky to see the sun for a few weeks a year so in my opinion it would possibly be wise to compensate with a supplement..does that make sense?...

Yes, it does.
But, then again it does raise the question, if we have evolved to produce vitamin D as an aid to our immune system. Why do we live outside the tropics, where we could maximise sunlight synthisis?
How many primates live ouside of the tropics naturally?

reading it again we haven't evolved to produce vitD it has always been there it has evolved with us as a neccessary aid.but as for primates living outside the tropix theres always chester zoo lol,but i wonder like you say how many live outside ie: in zoo's are they being given vitamin supplements in there feeds for there health, just a thought need to find a zookeeper.

also sorry lucid for going on about vitd on ur post just seems silly to start a new thread..unless you think its wise..

The discussion is good..........When I make a thread I don't try to control the flow..........there is alot of information shared here that makes my information base stronger.

I had heard before that 10 min a day in the sun is adequate for the vitamin D, and today is the first day I have seen sun in my part of the world for over a week! Better get out and soak a bit up!

Make the most of it.
I grew up in a place that can get too dry for clouds to form in summer, and too cold in winter.
If it ever got grey (rare), I knew it would turn blue soon.

I wonder if you are extra healthy.........did you get sick much as a kid?
