It seems a series of recent debate performances by Texas Republican governor Rick Perry have left Republican voters lukewarm on the notion of a Perry presidential run.
Which begs the question: could the race for the 2012 nomination come down to former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney versus Texas congressman Ron Paul?
Mr. Perry, who is facing criticism after a Thursday night debate hosted by Google and Fox News, continues to face criticism in key state, such as New Hampshire and Iowa. Recent polls out of New Hampshire show support for Mr. Romney at or near an all-time high, while Mr. Paul is consistently trailing the Massachusetts Republican.
“Romney’s support is really strong here. His people on the ground here feel good, they weathered the Perry thing pretty well and deflected his early rock-star bump,” said Patrick W. Griffin, a New Hampshire Republican consultant, in a interview with the Boston Globe. “I don’t think Rick Perry is going to play very well in New Hampshire.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Romney, who will host a town hall in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Tuesday, announced a string of New Hampshire state representative endorsements yesterday, the latest indication of growing support.
Sunday’s Florida Republican presidential straw poll shows growing support for the party’s unconventional candidates. Former Godfather’s CEO Herman Cain continues to gain national attention after clobbering Mr. Perry and Mr. Romney in the Sunshine State.
Recent polls in New Hampshire and Iowa also show growing support for Mr. Paul. The Texas Republican has fared well in recent polls out of the Granite State, while nationally he continues to trail Mr. Romney and Mr. Perry.
Discontent amongst voters could eventually place pressure on Mr. Perry to exit the race, leaving Mr. Romney and Mr. Paul to challenge one another. While Mr. Paul is likely to succumb to Mr. Romney, the platform offered to Mr. Paul would likely force major concession from Mr. Perry.
