Ronnie James Dio has died after a period of struggle against cancer.

The American heavy metal vocalist has played with Black Sabbath and Heaven and Hell.

Ronnie James Dio was 67 years. He died after a brief illness today, May 16

His real name is Ronald James Padovana and he has a history in many major rock groups. He is best known as the who replaced Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath 1979th

Ronnie James Dio has recorded several solo albums and had a successful solo career.

In late 2006 he was reunited again with former Black Sabbath members Toni Iommi and Geezer Butler of the band Heaven and Hell.

Heaven and Hell would have played on Sonispherefestivalen in Stockholm on August 7.

On Ronnie James Dios website you can now read a message from his wife:

"Today my heart is broken. Ronnie went off at 7:45 in the morning May 16 Many, many friends and family members had a chance to say goodbye before he passed away peacefully. Ronnie knew how much everyone loved him. We appreciate the love and support you all have given us. Please let us have a few days alone to deal with this terrible loss. He loved you all and his music will live forever. "
