saw 2 lights in sky tonight

at about 8:45 pm tonight i was walking round to my brother's house and, looking up, saw 2 white lights, one behind the other, seemingly very high in the sky, travelling slowly from approx. south to north. within seconds of me noticing them, the trailing light faded out, followed by the leading light. these were not planes. and we launched a chinese lantern when i got to my bro's, so i know it was not that either. i had no camera with me, but here is a simple pictorial representation
