From what I recall with people talking about the Indonesian tsunami in late 2004, when they were in the ocean, they felt a slight bump at most. The closer you are to a solid surface, the stronger the effect was. I don't know how it would be the other way around.

When you look at this : http://www.iris.edu/dms/seismon.htm you see little activity on the west coast of Northern America. That worries me a bit, 'cause it could be that something is building up here. The same goes for the north, ice pulls back, land is elevated, meaning more tension.
When this pressure finally is released that could result in powerful earthquakes, raptures and in the worst case scenario initiate yellow stone.
