When I was on the bus from Damascus to Riyadh, there was a beautiful young Russian lady who sat across the aisle from me. She was maybe 18. Besides her and I, everyone else on the bus was Syrian and they were all going to Saudia to escape the conditions in Syria...

I didn't get to talk to her much (the 12 year old next to me was waaaaay to eager to practice her English), but I did ask her how it was that she, coming from Russia, ended up in Syria of all places on her way to Riyadh. More than anything, I was curious how she got a visa to go to Saudia... I had spent my share of time in the lines at the Saudi embassy, and I had seen dozens of Syrian women with 2-3, sometimes 4 kids in tow, trying to join their husbands in Saudia after 6-8 years of separation. I KNOW visas aren't easy, my husband paid a $10,000 bribe directly to the Minister of the Interior's secretary to get my visa in 1 month! But anyways, she said she wasn't married but had a "friend" inside Saudia who had sponsored her and another woman to come for work...

.. I don't know who was more naive at the time, me or her.

And it haunts me even today....

Dodgy story Sock, would/could you do anything different if you could be in the situation again though?

Oh, I don't feel guilty... I was neither the cause of it nor could I do anything... It's just that it's one of those horrors you hear about on the news and in documentaries that seem so far away, surreal... Until it comes and slaps you in the face. Reality kicks in.
