I don't know what the sky crane did or where it shot to, but it's my guess that it's the sky crane that lowered Curiosity to the Martian surface.

I was thinking the same thing, but this smoke is roughly 1800 miles from where Curiosity landed. It shot off a good ways to clear the rover, but I doubt it shot that far.
