SOLAR CONVEYOR BELT IN THE NEWS

Image

IN 2006, NASA declared this:
May 10, 2006: The Sun's Great Conveyor Belt has slowed to a record-low crawl, according to research by NASA solar physicist David Hathaway. "It's off the bottom of the charts," he says. "This has important repercussions for future solar activity."
The Great Conveyor Belt is a massive circulating current of fire (hot plasma) within the Sun. It has two branches, north and south, each taking about 40 years to perform one complete circuit. Researchers believe the turning of the belt controls the sunspot cycle, and that's why the slowdown is important.

IN 2007:

The Solar Conveyor Belt, Sunspots, and Climate
NASA has found that the "solar conveyor belt", which is intimately connected with future sunspot cycles, has slowed significantly. This slowing points to a long and weak sunspot cycle, peaking in the early 2020s.
The Sun's Great Conveyor Belt has slowed to a record-low crawl, according to research by NASA solar physicist David Hathaway. "It's off the bottom of the charts," he says. "This has important repercussions for future solar activity."

The Fun of the whole thing is,
the very person, Hathaway, who declared in SCIENCE magazine on 12th March 2010
that the solar conveyor belt is very active for the last 5 years,
had said in 2007 and 2008 that solar conveyor belt is running very low.

HOW TO BELIEVE HIM THEN?

Read this:

What in the world is the sun up to now?

In today’s issue of Science, NASA solar physicist David Hathaway reports that the top of the sun’s Great Conveyor Belt has been running at record-high speeds for the past five years.

“I believe this could explain the unusually deep solar minimum we’ve been experiencing,” says Hathaway. “The high speed of the conveyor belt challenges existing models of the solar cycle and it has forced us back to the drawing board for new ideas.”

Here's another article explaining what happens with this Solar Conveyor Belt

AND THIS ARTICLE FROM NASA explains everything clearly

Monster has woken up, haha!

OMG! MONSTER PROMINENCE:
The biggest prominence in years has just lept off the surface of the sun.
Readers, if you have a solar telescope, look now!

The quiescent filament that has been making its way across the sun over the past couple of days finally appeared on the limb of the sun as a monster prominence. It's the biggest i've seen so far this solar cycle! Taken with SM40 @ f6 DMK31.
