These eruptions were not earth-directed, so there was only a slight chance any impact would be felt here at Earth.

Solar storm warning article 03-10-2006 (4 years ago)

Quote:
"History shows that big sunspot cycles 'ramp up' faster than small ones," he says. "I expect to see the first sunspots of the next cycle appear in late 2006 or 2007—and Solar Max to be underway by 2010 or 2011."

Who's right? Time will tell. Either way, a storm is coming.

Solar 'Conveyor Belt' Runs at Record-High Speeds article 03-12-2010 (3 days ago)

Quote:
The faster rate of currents on the sun and the expected weaker solar cycle have affects for those of us here on Earth. One affect is the temperature increase of the Earth could slow down, there would be fewer auroras, and to the extent that we depend on satellites, GPS, and cell phones there should be less disruption in service.

Well I guess whatever happens, NASA is right. :bang;

"It was a sudden and stunning outburst of activity," says photographer Thomas Hagen. "The auroras were so bright, they turned the water green."

This could be just the very active on March 16th and 17th. That's when a solar coronal mass ejection is due to hit Earth's magnetic field. NOAA forecasters estimate a 30% chance of geomagnetic activity and a 5% chance of severe geomagnetic storms.

Doesn't spaceweather.com get their info from SOHO, IE nasa.gov? Not that I don't trust spaceweather, but I can't find anyone else that says anything more than a 30% chance of anything and nobody's talking about a halo CME coming right at us. Probably just my researching skills.... Any help?

Solar 'Current of Fire' Speeds Up article 03-12-2010 (3 days ago)

Quote:
"I believe this could explain the unusually deep solar minimum we've been experiencing," says Hathaway. "The high speed of the conveyor belt challenges existing models of the solar cycle and it has forced us back to the drawing board for new ideas."

SUPER PROMINENCE:
Readers, if you have a solar telescope, scan your optics around the circumference of the sun. A jaw-dropping prominence is surging over the northwestern limb:
"I think the sun is waking up," says Alan Friedman, who sends the picture from his observatory in downtown Buffalo, New York.

The magnificent magnetic arch streches more than 20 Earth-diameters from end to end. Our planet would easily fit through any of the "little" plasma gaps evident in Friedman's photo. The size of the prominence makes it an easy target for amateur solar telescopes, and many observers say it is a mesmerizing sight as it surges and seethes through the eyepiece. Monitoring is encouraged.
