A SpaceX prototype rocket automatically detonated after an "anomaly" was detected during a test flight Friday in McGregor, Texas, the company told NBC News on Friday night. No one was injured.

John Taylor, a spokesman for SpaceX, said the rocket was a three-engine version of the F9R test vehicle, the successor to the company's Grasshopper, a prototype intended to pave the way for fully reusable rockets that would fly themselves back home. It's similar to the Falcon 9, which SpaceX uses to launch unmanned cargo spacecraft to the International Space Station.

Shame it exploded, a rocket that can be used again after it flies back to Earth is kinda cool.

Just was reading about this. Glad I did a search and didn't do a repost.

"“During the flight, an anomaly was detected in the vehicle and the flight termination system automatically terminated the mission,” the company said in a statement on Friday"

What anomaly was this that caused the termination of the flight?

The article does not allude to this. Would be interesting to know. :look:

.

Exactly my impression from the git go.

There is too much money involved,

They wouldn't try this without a serious investment of time and money.

They blew it up? On purpose?

Are you freaking kidding me?

I don't think so.

Why would you purposefully destroy your own paycheck?

Not convinced, not yet.

Maybe someone doesn't want branson to get too cozy upstairs.
Might see something he shouldn't while having space bongs. :look:

Who knows what that anomaly might have caused if the flight had not been terminated? It could have caused the rocket to veer off course, possibly even back toward the ground, where it might have hit a populated area, in which case the flight termination system did exactly what it was supposed to do; blowing it up may have prevented a major disaster. That being said, I do agree, it would be nice to know exactly what that anomaly was. Hopefully they can fix it. A reusable rocket would be an excellent replacement for the space shuttle, and, being launched by a commercial company, would probably cost a lot less than current launches.

Almost the same day two European satellites refused to go into the right orbit..

I remember this as a cluster when suddenly all these rockets and satellites heading for Mars started exploding and malfunctioning in the mid/late '90's...

I haven't been able to find any more information about this than what is in the original article. I wonder, are they hesitant to discuss the "anomaly" because it reveals some kind of proprietary information? It does seem counterproductive to self-destruct a very expensive prototype rocket…though it makes sense like All Creation said, if blowing it up might prevent it crashing into a populated area. Isn't that why they shoot off rockets from the middle of the desert, though? In case something happens and it crashes? Do they have other rockets to continue the project…or do they have to now go back and make a new one from scratch?

And aren't these the guys being funded by Richard Branson, who think they'll have commercial space travel viable in our lifetime? I don't know a lot about it, my brother has been super excited about it…and my take on it has been that none of us have ever seen actual footage of the moon landing, so the idea that "they" are going to let tourists fly into space is pretty laughable….
Remember, in a real conspiracy, all players are pawns regardless of their rank.

Yeah. Hopefully the passenger compartment will be a capsule that can be jettisoned before the rest of the rocket is blown up so that it can safely return to Earth. Otherwise....
