Mysterious noise escalates in Windsor, Ont.
An unexplained rumbling disturbed hundreds of Windsor, Ont., residents this weekend to the extent that some thought it was an earthquake, prompting calls for Ottawa to step in.

City Coun. Al Maghnieh said he was inundated with telephone calls, emails and Facebook messages this weekend after the so-called "hum" returned, louder than ever.

"Between the sound and the vibration, it was just very, very bad," Maghnieh said. "A lot of people are frustrated and to a point ... demoralized."

Residents across Windsor and neighbouring LaSalle began reporting a noise they describe as similar to an idling train or semi-trailer in February 2011.

Maghnieh said a "low-frequency rumble" seemed to peak early Sunday morning, calling it "really harsh."

He wasn't alone in this complaint.

"It was a rocking weekend. We actually thought an earthquake was happening," said Gary Grosse, administrator for the Windsor-Essex County Hum Facebook group.

There are approximately 800 members on Grosse's Facebook page, and he said he's aware of several more people who haven't come forward for fear of lowering their property values if they identify themselves as living within earshot of the hum.

"We need help and closure to put an end to this problem," Maghnieh said.

Seismic testing conducted by Natural Resources Canada last summer pinpointed a one-square kilometre area of Zug Island in River Rouge, Mich.

Grosse is now encouraging people to call the corporate headquarters of several steel companies with facilities on Zug Island.

"Don't be quiet. Don't be silent about the issue. You're not alone. Only through numbers can we get the issue resolved," Grosse said.

Maghnieh said Ottawa needs to continue the investigation because the noise it is affecting the quality of life on the Canadian side of the border.

"We're hoping the federal government will step up because in that report it said that another investigation is necessary to establish the source now that they have the location on Zug Island," Maghnieh said.

Some people claim the noise makes them sick and others say it keeps them awake at night, he said.

Government officials and a consultant hired by the City of River Rouge admit the rumbles and vibrations are an airborne sound wave originating from the general vicinity of Zug Island, home to several industries..

However, the City of River Rouge announced in November that it does not want to spend any more money to continue its investigation to track down the exact origin of the sound.

"If this is a matter of jurisdiction, I'm sure we can work the cross-border channels," Maghnieh said

For being someone who is a 'saved Christian' you sure do use a lot of rage, judgement, and outright whining in your posts. Most of your hate-filled comments are totally counterproductive to your claims of being a religious person. Mr. Khalilov, what is the nature of the unusual very low-pitched sounds reported by a great number of people in different parts of the planet since the summer of 2011? Many call them “The Sound of the Apocalypse”. Information about that comes from all over the world: US, UK, Costa Rica, Russia, Czech Republic, Australia, etc.

We have analyzed records of these sounds and found that most of their spectrum lies within the infrasound range, i.e. is not audible to humans. What people hear is only a small fraction of the actual power of these sounds. They are low-frequency acoustic emissions in the range between 20 and 100 Hz modulated by ultra-low infrasonic waves from 0.1 to 15 Hz. In geophysics, they are called acoustic-gravity waves; they are formed in the upper atmosphere, at the atmosphere-ionosphere boundary in particular. There can be quite a lot of causes why those waves are generated: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, storms, tsunamis, etc. However, the scale of the observed humming sound in terms of both the area covered and its power far exceeds those that can be generated by the above-mentioned phenomena.

The moon makes waves in our atmosphere as it moves in front of the sun During total solar eclipses, the moon moves between the earth and the sun, completely blocking out the sun's light. But that's not all that happens. Recently scientist proved that when this happens, the moon sends waves rippling through the earth's atmosphere that pile up like the bow waves on a boat.

Once again, science gets poetic. Many have compared the moon, usually the new moon, to a boat sailing through the skies. And under certain conditions, it seems, the moon has the same effect on the earth as a boat cutting through the water. It creates waves in the upper atmosphere that pile up into bow waves and stern waves.

When a boat moves through the water, it creates waves. They travel outwards from the boat in all directions. Often the boat travels faster than the waves, resulting in bow waves that pile up at the front of the book. Most people have seen them riding up the front of the boat in a series of 'folds'. Boats also create stern waves, but since the boat is traveling away from the waves, they fan out widely behind the boat.

The moon doesn't touch the earth's atmosphere, and thus, much of the time it doesn't have this effect. During a solar eclipse, though, the moon does something that does directly touch the atmosphere. It blocks out the sun, and causes a wide temperature dip with its shadow. This temperature change causes 'acoustic gravity waves' in the atmosphere.

'Acoustic gravity waves' are often confused with waves of gravity. Waves of gravity are actual waves in gravitational force itself, due to moving mass. These waves aren't present (or at least aren't detectable) during the eclipse. Acoustic-gravitational waves are what happens when temperature changes in a fluid, in this case the atmosphere. When a fluid changes temperature, it also changes density. This causes the section that has a different temperature to rise (if it's hot) and fall (if it's cool or as it cools) as gravity pulls it. The momentum of the gravitational pull causes it to fall past it natural density level, and often it rebounds. These fluctuations, a little like ripples on the surface of a drum, cause waves that travel outwards. In the atmosphere, these are called acoustic gravity waves.

The moon's shadow causes temperature drops across large swaths of the earth during a solar eclipse. Scientists have thought that this could cause acoustic waves, but in 2009 finally got a solar eclipse big enough to measure it. They found that the moon did cause acoustic gravity waves in the atmosphere. These waves have cycles that last 3 to 5 minutes, and they travel at 100 meters per second. They don't travel fast enough to outrun the shadow of the moon, though. Because the moon's shadow moves faster than the waves, they pile up at the leading edge of the motion and fan out at the trailing edge, just like a boat.
