The sound was felt or heard in all corners of San Diego County
Residents from Chula Vista to Oceanside are reporting a large rumble around 12:45 p.m. Friday.
Some people describe it as sounding like a door slamming while others said it was strong enough to rattle windows.
A check of the U.S. Geological Survey website shows no earthquake activity.
One San Diego resident mentioned the sound via Twitter "Uh... La Jolla just shook. Or at least my street did. Big boom too."
Carlos Ortega, of Solana Beach, wrote to us, "An earthquake shook here at 1244pm. Shook windows and walls for a good 5 seconds."
Mercy Ramirez wanted NBC 7 San Diego to know, "We're in Bonita, our our office shook for about 5 seconds, was this an earthquake? We're on the third floor and everything shook."
NBC 7 San Diego's Dagmar Midcap was in Del Mar at the time and described it as a "Sonic 'rumble'"
She tweeted, "according to my contacts at USGS, not seismic but rather sonic."
Sometimes, a military exercise known as chaff can cause a similar sound.
Two months ago, when San Diegans heard a similar sound, there was evidence of chaff on weather radar.
On Friday, however, Tina Stall with the National Weather Service said there was no visible chaff in the area at the time the noise was reported.
A spokesperson from Camp Pendleton said Marines are not training with anything unusual. They often train with various military equipment and will be training with tanks both Saturday and Sunday.

Did you hear a boom about 12:35 p.m.?
A mysterious boom shook much of San Diego County Friday afternoon, startling people from San Diego to Carlsbad to Escondido. The boom -- which was heard by some and felt by others -- occurred about 12:44 p.m., and was mostly experienced in coastal areas. The origin of the sound is unclear. The U.S. Geological Survey says there were no significant quakes in Southern California. Camp Pendleton said that they aren't doing any unusual artillery exercises. And Brian O'Rourke, a spokesman for Navy Region Southwest in San Diego said, "It wasn't us." It is possible that sound was a sonic boom produced by F/A-18 fighter jets out of Miramar. But such booms are usually more localized.
This sort of phenomenon has happened before. In March 2009, there was a mysterious boom that shook homes across Orange County. The source of the shaking was never identified. And there was a boom on April 19th of this year. Here is a report about it from a guy who really did some digging around.
If you heard something, send an email to gary.robbins@utsandiego.com, or tell us about it in the comments section. Alexander Wallace of Carmel Valley said, "I was laying in bed trying to take a nap. At 12:47pm, the bedroom door, which was closed, started to jiggle strongly as if someone was trying to get in. It lasted for about five seconds. VERY scary!"
A reader identifying himself as James of Oceanside said, "I noticed it as it was rumbling through I look at my wife and asked if she noticed. She didn’t notice! But then again, our kids were making a lot of noise, and today is 'trash day'."
Other comments:
"Sitting at my desk, a huge noise along with a quick shake, shake, shake. Not sure if it was earthquake or not, but our central office over on Morena (by Sea World) felt it too – although not all." William Anderson
"I heard it and felt it at 12:45, not 12:35. There was a loud crack, boom, and rumble, which shook my house very briefly. I just assumed it was an earthquake, and an hour later I checked the UT website to find out the location and magnitude. I’m surprised it apparently was not one." Paul Kavanaugh of Encinitas
"(I) heard and felt a very brief bang, lasted only a second or two, in UTC area around ?1 pm." Barbara Birch
"Could it be a secret test that they don't want to discuss quite yet? We'll probably learn about it in ten years time…haha." Louie
"I was in my office on east 30th street in National City. At first I thought it was an earthquake because the building shook. I went out side to see if there was someone on the roof and maybe they had dropped something heave above my office." Armando Lopez
"Just leaving Newbreak coffee in Ocean Beach around 12:45pm. I was in my car coming out of the parking lot at the lifeguard tower when it hit. It startled me and I did briefly think it was an earthquake. I saw the front window of the pottery store vibrate so it was definitely legitimate. Noting that it was not an earthquake I was thinking that perhaps something exploded in the pottery store, too hot of a kiln or something." Thomas Rice "I’m at the UCSD campus and felt the building sway then a little bit of an 'aftershock right after." Lucia
"I heard a big bang like a truck hit a car or something. People are saying that it was a meteorite." Alexander Ng
"There was a strong, single jolt that hit our building on Campus Point in the UTC area right at 12:43 – something felt more than heard. Initially thought it was an earthquake but it was a single movement and did not continue. It seems everyone in the building felt it." Scott Ericksen
"I 'felt the earthquake' but it was more like a huge gust of wind. It blew my curtains out of my window and made the large warehouse door of my boyfriend's work rumble. My usual tell tale signs didn't react. I have beaded lamps and they didn't move at all this time." Jolene of La Mesa
"It rattled my doors and windows pretty good in Del Cerro. I thought it was an earthquake, but I didn’t feel the floor move and the cats didn’t notice. They usually feel an earthquake before I do." Peter Lawson
"Boom Heard and Felt Carlsbad 12:43 PDT." Curtis J
