Something I heard yesterday was that the cable new outlets don't want to stop the coverage because of the competing news networks. They are afraid that if they stop the weather coverage, the next time a weather event happens. People won't tune into their network. People will remember, "Oh yea. CNN covered this wall to wall." and tune into CNN rather than FOX, MSNBC, etc.

evac is mainly for tourist sake.

tho indeed, a bit of fear mongering does goes into it. They are likely keying off the stupidity of Katrina and the gulf coast. Been some time since the carolinas had a hurricane roll threw.
So there are plenty of new snowbirds that have 0 to little experience with a large storm.

for those who have lived there a good bit, is just another day.

nothing "fishy" going on, and people have ignored "Mandatory" evac many times, the state is just covering its ass.

it's all in our best interests, of course.

Agreed. This storm is shit! Seems strange though. All this panic...
Let me take the waves out of the ocean
Let me take the stars down from the sky
Let me take the faith from your foundation
Let me take the wrong to make it right
Let me take away the dark like I’ve been here all night

Think about it like this, when telling people to leave N.Y.

Cat 1 = 75 - 94 mph sustained winds.

Irene - 700 mile diameter of these sustained winds.

N.Y. is a high concentration of people in above ground high rise buildings with LOTS AND LOTS of glass.

N.Y. is made up of a massive grid of buildings that will act as an air tunnel and actually make the 75 - 94 mph winds much faster.

It would take a moron or a fool to risk being in a area where glass and office debris will be viciously hurled as in a blender.

It's dangerous anywhere, but even more so in N.Y. city.

my guess is they are trying to cover their asses....
better be safe than sorry kinda scenario.
some flooding, some loss of power, maybe water shutoff for a while.
this is not tornado valley, we are not used to this.
hence the big fuss.
i'll be outside (as long as it's safe) taking pics......
then i need one of you geniuses's help to post them. i forgot how to. again. lol.

btw, they are evacuating the coast: coney island, the rockaways, long island, etc.... not downtown manhattan....

nevermnd that: some areas of manhattan are to be evacuated as well. just watched bloomberg telling people to try to gtfo. subways and public transp. to shut down at 12.
