IONOSPHERIC DISTURBANCE:
On May 5th, a pair of solar flares bathed Earth's upper atmosphere in X-rays and caused a double-wave of ionization to sweep over the Americas. This improved the propagation of low-frequency radio signals, which use the ionosphere as a reflector to skip over the horizon. Rogerio Marcon of Campinas SP Brasil was monitoring a 24 kHz aviation beacon when the flares occurred, and he recorded a double-surge in the beacon's signal strength:

A VLF daily record of the NAA 24kHz signals in May 05,2010. Tho SIDs are visible at the top of the " inverted parabola "

Each of the spikes is called a "SID," short for sudden ionospheric disturbance. One was produced by a C9-class flare at 11:52 UT; the other by a slightly stronger M1-class flare at 17:19 UT. The two SIDs ride atop a slower undulation in radio signals caused by the daily rising and setting of the sun. In terms of radio propagation, the two flares were as significant as the sunrise itself!

With solar activity on the rise, sudden ionospheric disturbances will become more common. Interested? Stanford University tells you how to build your own SID monitor.

Hey kingz my digital cable and internet service keep going out and when it does work it breaks-up into pixels and freezes. I am asking because if it does get worse our national grid could fail, I mean it is already fubar along with most US infrasturcture. So do you think it will get worse? I have hade my system checked several times and my signal is great. When I call my provider they are reluctant to give answers. This did not start happening until the Fall of 2009, and it's getting worse. One more thing I have seen personally more electronic malfuctions in automobiles and it's not just Toyota. Do you think this is also connected? Because ys know an adict like me can't live with out DTV.

It could deffinetly fail when it hits hard, it depends ofcourse in which place on earth... but I wouldn't be surprised if it will coming solar maximum.
And if it's since fall of 2009, then I don't know if it's because of the solar storms...
The automobiles I don't know anything about.. No car in this household ;) But I think we will see worse in coming future :scary:

Sometimes I hope a major EMP (electro magnetic pulse) takes down all grids... Back to ze dark ages for a while :nwo:

PARTING SHOT:
The "Mother's Day Flare Show" came to an end on May 9th when active sunspot 1069 rotated over the sun's western horizon. But wait--there's more to see. Even after the sunspot departed, it continued to hurl material up and over the limb. Click on the arrow to view a parting shot:

Video:

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the eruption using the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA), a bank of telescopes that views the sun at multiple extreme ultraviolet wavelengths. The AIA's 171 Å filter (false-color blue) traces magnetized gas with temperatures around a million degrees K. This means the eruption you just witnessed was hot.

BIG TWISTER:
On May 1st, a magnetic filament on the sun wound up and erupted. NASA's STEREO Ahead spacecraft was in the perfect position to observe the blast.

VIDEO:

The time-lapse movie spans three days, April 30th to May 2nd, and shows not only the big twister, but also many smaller filaments that twist and swirl without erupting. Such activity occurs every day and is part of the dynamism of the ever-changing sun.

More great movies from STEREO may be found here: http://stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov/gallery/selects.shtml

SOHO Captures 3 CME'S -Eruptive Trio

Pick of The Week
Eruptive Trio (May 7, 2010)

As an active region rotated into view, it blew out three relatively small eruptions over about two days (Apr. 30 - May 2) as STEREO (Ahead) observed in extreme UV light. The first one was the largest and exhibited a pronounced twisting motion (shown in the still from May 1, 2010). The plasma, not far above the Sun's surface in these images, is ionized Helium heated to about 60,000 degrees. Note, too, the movement of plasma flowing along magnetic field lines that extend out beyond and loop back into the Sun's surface. Such activity occurs every day and is part of the dynamism of the changing Sun.
