If god wanted his ten commandments to be taken seriously, then he'd probably spend more time earning some credibility. Unfornately, there is so much hypocrisy and double-standard in the ten commandments that no critically thinking person would honor the one who chiseled it. Here's what one self-respecting individual says to the ten commandments:

1. You shall have no other gods before me.
I shall have no gods. How does that sound?

2. You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God...
Ooo, jealousy is not a good trait. So, you can covet, but we cannot covet. Is that kinda like "do as I say, not as I do?"

3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
Well, god damn!

4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God...
How about you work six days a week, and we'll keep all the days holy. I hear of people wanting to do god's work. Why doesn't god do god's work?

5. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
English, please.

6. You shall not murder.
Hmm, doesn't it say "an eye for an eye" somewhere? Oh yeah, the jewish version. So, the jews get to kill, and you get to kill. But everyone else, NO. I get it. It's the whole "do as I say" schpiel again. It wouldn't stop me from killing you, though.

7. You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not program people to commit adultery.

8. You shall not steal.
You shall not drive slaves.

9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You really should practice what you preach, chump.

10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s...
Is that so your stooges can live in peace and corruption?

Fuck right off!

I do get the "honor you parents" part, but I'm curious what the rest of the commandment is supposed to mean...

For me this remains an enigma:

8. You shall not steal.
You shall not drive slaves.

Do not steal?

1. Billions upon billions were robbed in the name of carbon emission.

A few 'stealers' hacked the truth out....and saved the world.

2. Billions of dollars were being made on the vaccine, supposedly to cure H1N1 fever which the authorities of the world spread all the world over. They had a systematic method of creating panic. They said last february, "the very first day swine flu broke out in Mexico, 100 people died." Where?

A few 'stealers' again searched out the truth...and saved the world.

3. Now we have illuminatis, masons, new world orders, apollos, and what not...

You know, of course, that there were originally 15 commandments? But Moses tripped on his way down from the mount and dropped and broke the third tablet.

By the way, where does it say that priests aren't allowed to bugger the choir boys?

i wonder what sort of strange satisfaction you felt after posting this :clapper:

Test all things hold fast to that which is good.

That is in the bible. A good bit of advice I think. So there is some good stuff in there. That being said...that verse could and probably should be applied to the bible it is written in by those that read it.

I think I figured it out.

If we are supposed to make the analogy between the god that gives us life and the parents that give us life, then this is meant to be some sort of threat. This god would punish us if we did not properly appreciate the life that it gaves us. What a guy.

But that raises a decent question...Should we honor our parents unconditionally? What if our parents beat us and abuse us on a regular basis? Would they deserve our respect unconditionally? That's an easy one. Yet we're supposed to feel good about doing that even so, says god.

When you then consider a god that systematically abuses us and probably uses us as slaves, then the reasoning for that commandment makes more sense. We're supposed to honor a god that treats us like shit.
