The Marines would get in deep shit for doing this in uniform, and if they're not in uniform, they're just like any other civilian with a complaint.

How would they protect the protesters anyway? With violence?

That be the quickest way to draw an even more violent response from the pigs, except this time they'd be "justified". We saw how the media treated the rioters in the UK. All it will take is for one Marine to do what he's trained to do and seriously fuck a policeman up, and the MSM will be all over this story, and we know whose side they'll be on.

Bonus points if the Marine is gay!

A t shirt, dog tags, rank and badge would be all that would need to suffice. Unless the cop was a retired service man, I dont see any of them touching the soldiers, thats a more severe federal offense than touching an officer. A soldier gets attempt of murder for fighting civis, because they are trained to Kill. Not uphold the law, to defend the public.
