I knew sooner or later someone would touch on this subject.
I have been researching these buggers for some time, since before the 90s, and have an initial completed research paper on it. There is a considerable lexicon of sightings within the USA alone, and which do NOT involve UFOs, aliens, or prehistoric dinosaurs.
I have also been in contact with (among others) John Rhodes, who I have a sneaking suspicion is barking up the wrong tree in the wrong forest. That's as nice as I can put it.
Of course he has a book, a website, and a few TV interviews.....so I suppose that makes him an authority.
I have manage to document a correlation between a specific set of sightings and an interesting coincidence of location I believe to be more than coincidental and may possibly lead to a common site or location to start looking for them.
My suspicion is that these things have been here for quite some time, live underground, and use our river systems to move around at night when 99.9% of the human population is unconscious. If you have ever seen a river map of the United States, it looks like a satellite picture of a freeway system.
At one point I was going to organize an expedition to go after them, but of course as things go --- things change.
I have much more information, and I think I can dig up more of the research if anyone is really interested.
Good topic though....look forward to more

Well short of putting my paper up here, the teeny version goes that I have nine documented cases which were actually researched by other more formidable (real? haha) cryptozoologists than me, but I have taken their case reports and started to notice an inconvenient truth (hehe, sorry for the pun).
The stories I reference date back as far as the late 1800's (by western civilization) and do not include the Native American stories --- which I have found go back considerably farther.
Though the fundamental media and science looks on these findings and case evidence with some obvious derision, there is much more to it. As the time span of the stories covers well over 100 years of documentation, the similarities in reports are too unique and specific to dismiss as whimsy. There have been a couple of rather semi-mainstream sensational stories which at their more base level definitely show more than a rewrite from the Enquirer.
Of the nine cases, one involves actual capture and another personal contact with injuries. Both of these are documented.
Where I came in to the story involves how the case evidence appeared to me to have a wider geographic relevance. Each of the cases (also coincidentally) are confined to a narrow area that appears to be quite active for these reports over the 100 year period. It was a simple matter of acquiring a set of National Geographic maps and doing some homework.
What I discovered by accident was there is a very obvious tie-in to the locations and so obvious you'd have to be blind not to see it.
I sent the paper to several formal cryptozoologists with my conclusions and as you may guess, they neither showed any interest or rather it didn't fit their "funding profile".
So basically since I left the area during the mass biz closings several years ago and without further interest, my research in this area has been, well I guess back-burnered.

Give me a day or so to pull out the junk and see how to get it all up here. There's map image plates and whatnots....lol.
What the hell, I probably won't get a chance to finish it.....maybe someone else can pick up the torch.
