I will post a video I put together awhile back (like 3 years ago) that gets this same point across... that folding space is a matter of "denting" space. It would only make sense, if you had the right kind of technology, to utilize existing "natural structures" that make large "dents in space" as a starting point to creating a "folded space" connection (i.e. wormhole, vortex, etc).
If one could reach the center point of the Sun (very hard thing to prove IMO and would be hugely debated as being impossible with the current knowledge here on Earth), then you would have effectively reached "the lowest point" (gravitationally and space-time relative) possible within this Solar system (i.e. the Sun creates the largest dent in space in our Solar system). If you could reach this point, then my similar "theory" was that it would require less energy to "complete a punched hole" between two vast distances.
I think the idea has merit (obviously because I think along the same lines). We use "air" to travel across vast distances on the planet, and before airplanes we used ships which required water. The point being, we used existing "natural" states of matter to help us "move between" points on the "space-time" plane. We never viewed it this way, because our view is more relative to this planet than the entire Universe (well up until the last decade on a global scale).
It would make sense that other sentient beings in this universe might have found "natural occurring" methods to help to travel from one location to the next in a more "energy effective" manner. When we first started using "boats", we used paddles/oars to move the boat in water. Eventually we figured out how to use wind (sail boats), and then we used steam, gas, and diesel (propeller based).
So, I guess my point is that scientists have admitted that "punching a hole" between two points is possible, however they also have admitted that it requires a whole bunch of energy (more than we can currently produce). Of course, if you utilize the energy of the Sun (a free flowing fusion reactor), then you could create "battery" type systems that a ship of some sort could "pull from" as it entered something much like that of a coronal hole...and "punch through" space via some form of concentrated energy at the more central location of the sun (or something of that nature).
Not a crazy idea at all in my personal opinion... it would make sense for other beings to utilize something like our Sun for both energy as well as a means, in some fashion, to travel much further distances via another "universal" mechanic.
