Patricia Estebe from Camargue's tourist office explained: "This phenomenon is a result of the salt content in brine shrimp Artemia salina and algae Dunaliella salina. When the salt concentration is very high - which is the case before harvest - the brine shrimp die and saline algae proliferates giving this unusual colour. "

whatever the scientific explanation for this phenomena we have to remember that in the ancient culture they didn't have the terminologies that we have now. Bacteria, algae, fungus. So when they saw these waters turning that color they said that rivers and waters were turning to blood according to their understanding and perception.

You can add some beaches in Victoria Australia to the red algae outbreak list. With temperatures in the 40c+ region.
