Tropical Cyclone Tomas slams Fiji

(CNN) -- Tropical Cyclone Tomas battered Fiji on Monday evening as the powerful storm roared into the chain's northern islands, emergency officials said.

Fiji's National Disaster Management Office "is advising all members of the public, especially in the northern and eastern divisions, to please ... heed the warnings issued by agencies," said Anthnoy Blake at the National Emergency Operations Centre. Emergency response teams were in place.

At 4 p.m. local time, Tomas was packing winds of 185 km/hr (115 mph), with gusts to 235 km/hr (145 mph), according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in Hawaii.

The Category 3 storm was about 465 km (290 miles) northeast of the capital, Suva, was expected to exit the Fiji chain by Tuesday evening.
