In general there are two kinds of understanding time.

Asking what time is a short answer would be: Time as an expression of changing.

Asking whether time is real a short answer would be: Time is real as far as we experience changing. Time is not real as far as we:

1. set measuring references, for this is by chance and randomly;

2. divide time into past, present and future, for the real happening of changing is always NOW meaning time happens always NOW; a past and future is actually no time but THOUGHTS - not more than thoughts which are real as thoughts but not as real time.

Asking how time can be understood there are two possibilities after having clearance of time really happening only in the NOW:

a. Time is a linear happening describing a linear process - it starts in the past and goes via present directly into the future. Linear time understanding is economy thinking. And the name of time going straight ahead (linear) is called progression. Short: Time is here understood as ever new phenomenon with hardly seen references to the past..

b. Time is a circular happaning describing processes which are seen in a recurring or repeating way. Like sunrise or spring or birthday or x - mas etc. The circular time understanding is looking upon the effect of similarity and return. In such perception you find for instance recurring similarities in the life of your great grandmother and yourself thus finding a connection. Or you research pattern in history and look at similar pattern at other times - the point is you understand time not linear but circular as return at always new level thus finding clear references to past and a possible future.

Now listen. It goes about 2012. The Mayans had a circular understanding of time thus creating a circular calender expressing their circular time insights. But it is Mayan understanding which is not necessarily the only possible circular understanding. They saw 2012 something happening or accomplished in a circular way. This does not mean the end of the world. The Mayan way included for instance also killing and living human offerings I clearly refuse. So why should I absolutely follow Mayan insight in a calender of circular Mayan time understanding?

this was great.as anuki said,there's a lot to chew on.
as for me,i believe in one time.
the past,present and future are all happening now,at this moment.
time is neither linear or circular..
it is vertical,as if a stack of papers is evenly spread on a spindle.
as above.so below.

It is first necessary to understand the space, then you will notice that the time does not exist.
