On the question of "what's the underlying motive", this is a double edged sword.
On the one hand it is to prevent people unifying, divide and conquer.
On the other it is the Hegelian dialect, problem reaction solution.

As to the question of "who benefits".
It is the group of individuals that have been responsible for all of the atrocities perpetrated by humans since the dawn of civilisation.

It's a BIG distraction, very big distraction.

We should have a look at everything that's going on, not just this. We all need to be aware of everything.

Find out what is happening, something big is happening, and it's not Israel.

The entire act was a provocation and a test to see how far they could push. The people on the ship knew exactly what they were doing, they pumped up the media for it, and they crossed the line just enough to get a harsh reaction for the camera.

sockpuppet: sounds just like what Israel would do to legitimise it's occupation right! WRONG. Ya see, these are just humanitarian's (from multiple nation states), without battleships, helicopters, tanks, missiles, machine guns, bullet proof vests, and any other weapons or armoury of war. Whatever nation or religion you’re from, I think we can all agree, once a country decides to take pre-emptive action against a group of people, that aren’t any sort of direct threat, and don’t poses even the tiniest possible aggressive capability, then the country that has taken this pre-emptive action has stepped way over the line.

Israel could have simply communicated with the flotilla, negotiated inspections that would satisfy themselves that all the aid onboard was legitimate, and then let them go on their way. But no they wouldn’t have that would they. Instead Israel, with all the arrogance and mite of one of the biggest weaponries in the world (including illegal nuclear weapons) goes out into International waters and aggressively attacks a group of citizens from a good portion of the world’s nations, to enforce an illegal occupation.

Israel may have duped the world up till now, but they have just helped wake up all of us!
