US church urges married couples to ‘have more sex,’ causes tussle

Joplin - A church in Joplin, Missouri has created an uproar over billboards and a website urging married couples to increase their sexual activities in order to avoid sinful temptations like adultery and pornography.
Pastor Heath Mooneyham of Ignite Church in Joplin, Mo. said the church is addressing issues that affect marriages. “We’re doing a series about sex, and God’s intended purpose for it. We’re hitting things like adultery and pornography,” Mooneyham said, according to ABC News.
“That is really one of the major issues that’s ripping marriages apart. They are at a higher risk of adultery, looking at pornography - that lead to divorce,” Mooneyham said, Oneida News reports.
The church website displays a link to its related site, MySexLifeSucks.org and has created problems for those who take their children to a Sonic Drive-In in the vicinity of one of the church billboards.
Veronica Warren told KODE-TV, an ABC affiliate in Joplin that the sign does little for her in wanting to attend the church. “There is no way ever I would take my kids to a church with a big sign advertising sex,” Warren said.
Mooneyham has defended the church’s position and, according to ABC News, said: “The town’s divided down the middle on this. This is the Bible Belt. They’re freaking. But the congregation has been really great about it. They understand the message behind it.”
According to the church’s related site, God is in favor of sex, according to the church’s related website. A caption on the home page proclaims: “God is pro sex -- it should be exciting” and an accompanying video asks “What’s the big deal?”
That short video then lists a number of reasons why sex among couples should be openly discussed, including the statistic that 49 percent of marriages now end in divorce and 52 percent of Americans are dissatisfied with their sex lives.
“God created it and he’s not freaked out by it,” Mooneyham said. “So I don’t see why we should be,” he added, according to ABC News.
