US Navy rescues Iranian fishermen from Somali pirates

A US aircraft carrier whose presence in the Persian Gulf last week triggered threats of retribution from Iran was involved in the rescue of 13 Iranian fishermen being held captive by Somali pirates in the nearby Arabian Sea.

An American naval patrol accompanying the USS John C Stennis responded to a distress call issued by the captain of the MV Al Molai, an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel.
The USS Kidd, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, despatched a rescue team that boarded the boat, freeing the crew which had been held captive for 40 days.
The pirates were detained and transferred to the Stennis, which last week steamed through the Persian Gulf on what was described as a "routine mission" as the Iranian navy held war-games in the area.
Incensed, Iran gave warning that if the aircraft carrier returned to the Gulf it would take unspecified action. The confrontation came amid growing tension in the area after Iran threatened to respond to new US and EU sanctions by blockading the Strait of Hormuz, the narrowest point of the Gulf, through which a third of the world's tanker-borne oil is ferried.
