What Happened To The Apostles?
Many do not know or at least rarely speak about what happened to the close faithful followers of the one known as Jesus Christ. Here is there reported fates!
Matthew - killed by stabbing as ordered by King Hircanus
James, son of Alphaeous - crucified
James, brother of Jesus - thrown down from a height, stoned and then beaten to death at the hands of Ananias (circa AD 66)
John - tortured by boiling oil, exiled to Patmos in AD 95
Mark - burned during Roman emperor Trajan's reign
Peter - crucified upside-down by the gardens of Nero on the Vatican hill circa AD 64
Andrew - crucified on an "X" shaped cross by Aegeas, governor of the Edessenes, around AD 80
Philip - stoned and crucified in Hierapolis, Phrygia
Simon - crucified in Egypt under Trajan's reign
Thomas - death by spear thrust in Calamina, India
Thaddaeous - killed by arrows
James, son of Zebedee - killed by sword in AD 44 by order of King Herod Agrippa I of Judea
Bartholomew - beaten, flayed alive, crucified upside down, then beheaded
It is interesting to note here that John whom many "arguably is considered" to be the author of the Book of Revelations amazingly after having been tortured by boiling oil retained the ability to speak or write...it is not clear how he was tortured with boiling oil but I'm sure that it was designed to incapacitate him as much as possible but yet if it was him...he managed to produce a book that scares the bejeebers out of most people that reads it. Makes you wonder if it was truly divine revelation or the fired up imagination of a man wishing and wanting devine revenge on his fellow man!

how old was he then
I have no idea other than that he was quite elderly when sent there during the reign of Domitian and John was released by the successor of Domitian...named Nerva in AD 96 where he returned to Ephesus the same place from where he was exiled from. Therefore his stay on Patmos and living in the small cave named today as "Apokalypsis" was relatively short.
It is also interesting to note that in another description of the Isle of Patmos written by a transient prisoner named John Kameniatis that Patmos was without water and himself and others were tormented by thirst. Therefore, the alleged writer of the Book of Revelations also must have had divine intervention regarding fresh water or knew of or had access to a secret source of water.

Many believe John to have been very young, ie late teens at Christ's crucifixion. So if we take 95 A.D. minus 33 A.D. we get 62 years. So if he was 19 in 33 A.D., he would have been 81.
These dates are not exactly accurate as there are some that postulate that Christ actually was crucified in 31 A.D. But give or take, to answer your question, John was probably in his early 80s at the time of writing The Revelation.

Paul travelled widely, made at least three major missionary journeys, wrote many letters of which thirteen still exist (some scholars dispute three of them), and his life and work is touched upon in a variety of ways in his letters. On returning to Jerusalem after his third journey, he was arrested and during his subsequent trials, as a Roman citizen "appealed to Caesar" for judgement - all covered by Acts 21-26. Chapters 27 and 28 then describe Paul's voyage and journey to Rome in fascinating nautical detail. Thereafter his life, and death is a matter of conjecture and tradition.
For some two years after his arrival in Rome, he was under house-arrest, before possibly being executed in the persecutions of Emperor Nero that followed the burning of Rome in AD64. If so, Paul's authorship of the three "Pastoral Letters" - 1 and 2 Timothy, and Titus - can be open to doubt.
However, there are strong traditions that on appeal to the Emperor on what was a Jewish religious charge, he was acquitted. He remained free for perhaps three years, revisiting Ephesus and other churches, and even going as far as Spain, before being re-arrested and sentenced to death. In his cell, he wrote his last letter - the Second Letter to Timothy - before execution around the year AD67.
Tradition is he was beheaded at a place now called Tre Fontane in Rome, and that the church of St. Paul stands over his grave.

Yes, He was Formerly known as Saul of Tarsus, and his claim to fame was persecuting christians. And oddly enough, even though he was declared an apostle by virtue of his vision...he never personally met Jesus, other than through this vision.
"You have heard, no doubt, of my earlier life in Judaism. I was violently persecuting the church of God and was trying to destroy it. I advanced in Judaism beyond many among my people of the same age, for I was far more zealous for the traditions of my ancestors.
—Paul's Letter to the Galatians 1:13-14"
One day on the way to Damascus by donkey, he was stricken blind, and fell from his horse, cowering in fear at the vision. A third person account is rendered in the book of Acts:
As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?"
"Who are you, Lord?" Saul asked.
"I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting," he replied. "Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do."
The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything.
In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, "Ananias!"
"Yes, Lord," he answered.
The Lord told him, "Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight."
"Lord," Ananias answered, "I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem. And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name."
But the Lord said to Ananias, "Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer for my name."
Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit." Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength.
—Acts of the Apostles 9:3-19, New International Version
