Over the next couple of months I will have a great deal of time to read and may be off the Internet completely for some time. Luckily, the internet has become a vast available library, making it possible to read things I would have never imagined...

So, I'm looking for a good long list of life-altering books, articles or anything else I can add to my library...

Not sure what flavor youre looking for, but you asked what had changed our lives.
Ive marked in red the ones that had the most profound immediate effect:
Some of it might be boring to you, dont know what you like..

Anything and everything by Joseph Campbell..
(he did a multi part interview with Bill Moyers on PBS..and translated that into a book..)
In preferential order:

These all deal with mythology, how and why they function, and how and why so many are almost EXACTLY the same in their structured creation myths, and sacred numbers..and how they fit into time cycles..across all cultures..the numbers are almost the same..

The Hero with a Thousand Faces
Myths of Light
The Power of Myth
Mythic Dimensions
*(any of the set of comparitive religions..there are four)

Elaine Pagels:
The Gnostic Gospels
The Nag Hamadi Library (dead sea scroll era material)

Mark Twain
Letters From the Earth..
(the mark twain writings you never read about--VERY heavy and funny shit)

Carl G Jung:
Psychology and the Occult
Symbols of Transformation
Flying Saucers: A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Skies (no shit)
Modern Man looking for a Soul

Friedrich Nietzche:
Thus Spake Zarathustra
The AntiChrist
Twilight of the Idols

Anything by Terence Mckenna..
*his writings on Salvia
*His writing on DMT

Rick Strassman:
DMT The God Molecule

Tibetan book of the Dead

Well everybody should definitely read George Orwell's '1984' and 'Animal Farm' plus Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World' and 'The Doors of Perception'. Anything by Colin Wilson is worth reading particularly 'The Occult' and 'Mysteries' as is 'The Great Beast' by John Symonds the best Crowley biography. Stan Gooch's 'Guardians of the Ancient Wisdom' is also well worth a read.

Fiction wise I always think Michael Moorcock's Jerry Cornelius books are fantastic ('The Final Programme','The English Assassin', 'A Cure For Cancer' & 'The Condition of Muzak') - they're completely bonkers mixing sci-fi/political thriller/psychedelia and chaos theory!

Also there's a great book called 'Satan Wants Me' by Robert Irwin about three hippy music fans joining an occult group in the 60's which I've re-read about 5 times - great British 60's psychedelic atmosphere as well as an eye opener! I'd also recommend reading 'The Lord of the Rings' - it's a much more immersive, fulfilling and spiritually uplifting experience than the films if that's all you're familiar with.

The ghost stories of M.R. James and H.P. Lovecraft's collected short stories are also excellent - they've all been either badly adapted (although the BBC M.R. James dramatisations are usually well done) or completely ripped off for various tv programmes and films through the years but the originals are always best!

H.G. Well's short stories are also s.f. classics and much ripped off. Well worth a read particularly 'The New Accelerator', 'The Invisible Man', 'The Time Machine', 'Jimmy Goggles the God', 'Davidsons Eyes', 'The Man Who Could Work Miracles' etc etc...

And if you want everything turning on its head try 'Naked Lunch' or 'Nova Express' by William Burroughs!

I could go on but I think that's enough essentials from my perspective to be going on with.

Wow!

Great lists guys.

I honestly have no preference in what I read. I just have the need to know, and believe that everything ever written down contains another piece of the puzzle that is truth. This has led me to search for Hitler's Diary as well, which I have been unable to find just yet. If anyone has it in any electronic form, I would greatly appreciate a copy.

The most profound 'fiction' I have ever read is most definately Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Orwells Animal Farm.

Thank you, I will find as many of those titles as I can... and then we can all sit down with Oprah and discuss our book club. lol

the reason you can't find hitlers diarys is because they turned out to be forgeries.
