To the best of my knowledge a pole shift does'nt occur overnight but rather is something that happens over a period of years, deacades or longer, it happens gradually and alot of research in indicitive that right now the Earth is in the process of shifting poles. What are we going to do about it, worry ?... I say enjoy the ride..

National Geographic have some excellent articles on the subject of pole shifts. It suggests, like you say, that a pole shift would occur over many years - probably thousands.

The land mass of earth is very even, so that makes a rapid pole shift impossible.
