If we ask Muslims who Allah is, they will say that God is the Creator, the all-Knowing. Their answer is not that much different from the answers that we will get from everyone else about their God, but when it comes to Allah as God, there are a lot of problems, and we will go over them.

Before we can understand the person of Allah, we need to understand his name first. Muslims try to make us believe that Allah is the same as the God of Christianity and of Moses. They even try to convince us that Allah is an Aramaic word and that Jesus used it when he spoke in Aramaic. How true is this claim?

When the movie “The Passion of the Christ” came out several years ago, Muslims took clips from the movie, in which Jesus spoke Aramaic, saying the name of God. They then used those clips to create their own videos to prove their claim, that the name, Allah, is indeed Aramaic. The Aramaic word they were trying to adopt is Elah, El not Al like Allah.

Here’s a quick and easy study:

وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ دِيناً مِمَّنْ أَسْلَمَ وَجْهَهُ لله وَهُوَ مُحْسِنٌ واتَّبَعَ مِلَّةَ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ حَنِيفاً وَٱتَّخَذَ ٱللَّهُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ خَلِيلاً

In Qur’an 4:125, there are two words for Allah, but each one does not mean the same.

If you don’t know Arabic, you will not notice much difference between the two words except one letter, but actually, their difference is much more than that.

The first one is لله (lillah) and the second one is ٱللَّهُ (Allah). In Arabic, al means the, so if we take Al away from Allah and lil away from lillah, that leaves us with lah (god), a word that is common to both names. In English, lillah translates to to god and Allah translates to the god.

لله = Lil Lah = To Lah
ٱللَّهُ = Al Lah = The Lah

As you can see, although lillah and Allah are each written as one word in Arabic, lil and Al are not part of the word lah, itself—that is, lillah and Allah are each made up of two words. Again, lillah is to god and allah is the god.

In Arabic, al is always equal to the and it is attached to names which are attributed to God only. This is why all the 99 names of Allah start with Al or The. Take note, however, that The is not part of the name. It is just a device used to indicate that the name is unique to God–only God can be given this distinction. For example, we cannot say The Muhammad, because Muhammad is just a name for a person.

It is interesting to note the Messiah is called AL-Maseeh in the Qur’an. It means he is the only Messiah in the whole world. He is the only man in the Qur’an who has Al or The attached to his name.

What Allah Says About Himself

Allah Wants Sons, Not Daughters.

19 أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ اللَّاتَ وَالْعُزَّىٰ

20 وَمَنَاةَ الثَّالِثَةَ الْأُخْرَىٰ

21 أَلَكُمُ الذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ الْأُنثَىٰ

22 تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰ

19 Did you see AL-LAT and AL-’UZA

20 and MANAT the third one?

21 What for you the male gender ones and to Allah the females?

22 This is a really unjustified division
(Qur’an 53:19-22)

I’ve never heard a god say such a thing before. First, Allah says it is unfair for him to have daughters (Al-lat, Al-‘uza, and Manat) instead of sons. Second, it is unfair that the Arabs get sons—“for you the males and for me the females”—while he gets only daughters. Now think about it. Allah is complaining that the Arabs are more blessed than he is, because they are blessed with sons, while he only gets daughters. Isn’t Allah the Creator? Why doesn’t he bless himself with sons? The following verse explains why:

بَدِيعُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۖ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لَهُ وَلَدٌ وَلَمْ تَكُن لَّهُ صَاحِبَةٌ ۖ وَخَلَقَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ ۖ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ سورة الأنعام , Al-An’aam

Qur’an 6:101, is a question about how Allah is supposed to have a son if he never had a girlfriend! Allah cannot have sons because he doesn’t have a girlfriend?

As long as this is the answer Muslims give to Christians about why Allah cannot have a son, it only shows that Allah has a very wrong idea about what Christians believe. No Christian believes that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was the girlfriend of God.

This complete misunderstanding proves to me that Allah cannot be the same as the God of Christians; not only because Allah does not know what Christians believe, but also because he thinks that he is the same as any man—that he cannot have children unless he has a woman to have sex and procreate with. This alone tells me that the one who created Qur’an 6:101 was speaking from the mentality of a man, not God—a man who is sure that if he does not have a woman, then he cannot have children. He tried to speak for God, but he can only speak within his limits as a man.

The Q'uran or hadiths interpreted the Trinity as God the Father, the Son and Mary--how could a book inspired by God make this mistake?

Misunderstandings of the Christian Doctrine of the Trinity

Many Muslims mistakenly think that Christians believe in three gods: Mary, Jesus, and God. On this issue, Ibn Abbas writes: "What is meant by the Trinity is God the most high, His consort, and His Son."

I will briefly mention some of the reasons behind this misunderstanding:

The Arabic word 'thalatha' is mistranslated as 'Trinity'
Thalatha appears nineteen times in the Qur'an where it is correctly translated as "three". Unfortunately, the word thalatha was mistranslated as "Trinity" by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. His translation of Surah 4:171 (from Arabic to English) reads, "Say not Trinity, (the Qur'an in Arabic states "say not thalatha"). Again, thalatha only means 'three,' and it is certainly different from the word trinity which means three in unity of one.

Also, in Yusuf Ali's translation of the Arabic Qur'an (Surah 5:73) he mistranslated the simple Arabic words 'thaalithu thalatha.' He made them mean "one of three in a trinity," instead of the obvious and only meaning "The third one of three." Consider the problem that the majority of the Muslim world has by not understanding the Arabic language of the Qur'an. When they read this verse in English, they automatically assume that the Qur'an rejects the Biblical belief in the Triune God.

The Arabic Qur'an contains no reference to the Christian Doctrine of the Triune God
Neither the word Trinity nor the concept of the Trinity appear at all in the original Arabic Qur'anic text. The Qur'an never mentions that Christians believe in God as Father, Son, Holy Spirit. The Qur'an never mentions "three in one."

The Qur'an just rejects the belief in three separate gods
The Qur'an misrepresents the Trinity as a family of Allah, Mary, and Jesus. For example, Surah 5:73 states: "They do blaspheme who say: allah is one of three in a Trinity." The Qur'an named these three gods as Jesus, His mother Mary, and Allah as we read in Surah 5:116, which states: "O Jesus the son of Mary! Didst thou say unto men, 'Worship me and my mother as gods in derogation of Allah?"

We read in Surah 5:75: "Christ, the son of Mary, was no more than a Messenger...His mother was a woman of truth. They had both to eat their (daily) food." The Qur'an explains that Jesus and Mary couldn't be gods because they needed to eat food to survive. So like everybody else, they were both humans, because God does not need any sustenance. The famous Muslim commentator Zamakhashari commented on the word thalatha in Surah 4:171: "According to the evidence of the Qur'an, the Christian maintains that God, Christ, and Mary are three gods and that Christ is the Child of God by Mary..."
