This is one part that people love tearing down the character of Jesus.

The message in the story of him going Rambo on the temple merchants is because they had turned "forgiveness of sins" into Walmart.

They were selling different animals for different sacrifices for different sins. And you can imagine how that played on the psyche of the people. If some poor guy didn't have enough money to purchase a particular grade of sacrifice, he may have done what he could to purchase something to alleviate at least a little guilt. Yet would go home with the burden of not having enough money to purchase what he needed to sacrifice to pardon his sin.

Of course the Pharisees condoned this establishment, as they were capable of absolving themselves of all sins from via their social/political/religious positions. It afforded them privilege of maintaining a seat of judgment as well a clear conscience.

So, Jesus called them out. Threw some tables around and exposed the hypocrisy of the priests.
