I've heard of this happening as well in the Caribbean where people use puffer fish poison to create "zombies". The heart rate is so slow and breathing so shallow that the person is confused for dead.

Because of this, they have extended the length of wakes to insure the poison runs it course and the person may awaken.

Just do a quick google search for "puffer fish poison zombie" and there are all kinds of links.

They don't enbalm here either unless requested. My dad had my mum done and she looked bloody awful - I wished they'd left her be.

As for the story, that's why I want a cremation - to make sure I'm dead! Then again, I'd be happy just put on the compost heap and then shovelled back into the earth. Or tipped in the sea to give the fishes something to nibble on.
