as machines, robots become smarter and more human like people will become more attached to their AI friends.
the robot in question, yep i would shut the thing down but not straight away.
I think that my human curiosity would want to hear what it had 2 say first then flick goes the switch.

unfortunately there are people allready dependent on their little machines, computers rings a bell, and for them its all they hav in their lonely lives.

some people depend on thier computers maybe cause of result of accident or simillar and cant get around etc, but for others maybe its cause of an interlectual shortfall where they rely on their computers for all their daily stimulation from the web or what ever.

so imagine when computers are so human like that you can vocally interact with them maybe even befriending them, then for some it would b impossible to shut down.

It would be no different to turning off the life support for a human. Actually it would be a lot easier to do. Sign me up for the job.

Image That's a doozy, and tickled me.
A guy's blow up doll went down on him, if the guy that sold it him would have known he would have charged more.

I admit, if I KNEW the AI was self aware, and that the implications for me cutting it off would mean the robot understood that it would no longer be self aware, I would have a very difficult time cutting it off. Along with self-awareness I would need to know if the robot had ambition. I think that with the 2 together, "Self Awareness and Ambition" there is a strong likelihood that there is an artificial emotion, which essentially means the robot is alive and can reason much as a human and could feel fear and.....

Ah screw it, I'd cut it off.

This is entirely too much rationalizing for 4 in the morning.

I think the question of would i switch of an AI would come down to is it malfunctioning?
Is it serving its purpose or is it a danger to others?

If it was malfunctioning or a danger to other forms of life and there was no way of repairing it then i would not hesitate regardless of how much it pleaded.

What if a serial rapist or killer was on death row, would we not execute him/her because he/she was pleading for their life?

So my answer is if there was no reason to shut down an AI, than No i would not.

The day you decide that you would not switch off an AI is the day you loose reality with humanity.

Was that controversial??? I hope so....

You and I know that a robot is a man made machine... yes we are getting them to resemble and act more and more like humans.. we are humanising the machines which is ok in my opinion. However, we must know at all times that they are just machines and do not have emotions like us, they will never have emotions like us... so swicthing them off is like switching off a good movie on the TV, its like buying the car of your dreams and then leaving it in the rain, sure you feel for it, but they do not feel back... and guess what?? You can always swicth them back on...

Why is there a need to make robots resemble humans anyway? I think its the ultimate power trip when you can create a servant or lover that does exactly what you want it to do... and let's face the truth, this is the primary driver of this creation.. we cant enslave humans but let's build us some...
