Hi Guys,
Last night at about 11:15p.m. me and my girlfriend went out our back door to have a cigarette and I noticed a bright orange light to the southeast. It was quite low, definitely below 1000ft, as it was beneath the cloud line. Once I realised it had no FAA lights and it was moving (albeit very slowly) I rushed back in to the dining room to grab my girlfriends camera (Sony Cybershot 8.1megapixel). I turned it on to video mode but couldn't pick up the object (it is only a small domestic camera and the video has no zoom function) so I tried to put the camera on night mode to take a picture but when I looked back to the object it had shot upwards and was barely visible through the cloud as a pinprick and dissappeared vertically. I was unable to get a shot of it. but below is a diagram of what we saw.

We live in Salisbury UK about half a mile from the Cathedral, the spire is visible from our back door to the east.

The object was not a plane or helicopter nor was it a flare (I work for Chemring Countermeasures and our company is the world leading manufacturer of flares so I know what they look like!)

Below is a image of the area and how we saw the object. If anyone else lives around here and saw anything last night I would be interested in what you saw.

I tried to post the sighting at the MUFON website but it wont let me post it for some reason.

Another Xmas day sighting U.K.

Case Number: 21143
Log Number: GB-12262009-0004
Submitted Date: 2009-12-26 06:31 GMT
Event Date: 2009-12-25 21:30 GMT
Status: Submitted
City: Basingstoke Hants
Country: GB
Longitude: -2.0
Latitude: 54.0
Shape: Fireball,Other,Unknown
Description:

My sister and I were outside smoking cigarettes after Christmas dinner. (we eat it late!) It was quite a clear and starry night. My sister pointed something out in the sky behind me. I turned to look and saw a fairly bright orange light at what looked to me like a pretty high altitude - I would guess above 50,000 feet. It was moving extremely fast - too fast for any normal plane at such an altitude and it passed over our heads and away ino the distance within probably 20 to 30 seconds. It appeared to pulsate as it flew, but I think that was down to odd wisps of clouds here and there partly obscuring it. My sister thought it was a meteorite which it could have been, but I ruled that theory out due to it not appearing to have an angle of descent or burning up. I said I thought it was some sort of secret high speed plane flying out at around mach 7 or 8. As it faded into the distance, I pointed out to my sister that I could hear a faint engine noise from it, but she said she couldn't hear it. The next morning, I checked Google news for a any sightings, but there didn't appear to be any reports. So to sum up - I think I saw a secret plane and that someone thought that Christmas day night would be a great time for flying it as they would have little chance of being seen due to people celebrating Christmas.

Good post badger pity about the camera, a bit earlier then maybe you would have a great shot

Thanks Rizze,
Basingstoke isn't that far away from me. Shame he didn't say which direction it was going in.

I'm gutted about the camera as it was less than half a mile away. I'm going to invest in a reasonably priced XLR because quite often I see things when I go out for a ciggy but this is the first time since being at this house someone was with me when I saw it.

@badger
Seems a lot of people going out for a smoke are having good sightings as of late.(According to reports on mufon)
Being barred from smoking inside has it's benefits. :flop:

Good job Badger.
You were cursed by my camera luck though.
90% of the time I grab my camera like that, the battery is too low, my wife left it set on macro, it won't focus.............sheeeees. I'm threatening to go back to 35mm. Can't afford $500 for a decent camera.

Boxing day, Saturday 26th December 2009. 8.15pm. Kidderminster, Worcestershire, UK.

I can confirm what you saw (OP). Just five or ten minutes ago I stepped out onto my front door step for a cigarette (coincidence?!) and saw a total of three orange lights (exactly as you described). Not good at estimating height or distance but they appeared to be just below cloud cover height, which tonight is thin, hazy and sparse (can see stars - Ursa Major was one constellation that was clearly visible). They appeared, one at a time (a minute or two between each) to my right as I was stood facing north. No engine sound, no visible navigation lights - travelling in a South-south-easterly to North-north-westerly direction. The second one slowed and seemed to change course as it disappeared behind the rooftops of the houses opposite. However all three roughly followed the same flight path. There was a jet (probably passenger aircraft) that flew in a roughly opposite flight path around the time between the appearance of the second and third UFO and the engine noise could be heard as well as the flashing navigation lights being clearly visible (this was at a higher altitude, above the cloud cover). The orange lights were brighter than the stars visible around them.

One of the better 'sightings' I have had in many a long year.

here's another sighting in Filey.. the pic isn't very clear but here's the report

http://mufoncms.com/cgi-bin/manage_sighting_reports.pl?mode=view_long_desc&id=21152&rnd=420331261860946

Saw first two orange orbs, outside of work place in the heart of Filey, moving at high speed towards the sea direction. Witnessed it with my Boss and his wife whilst having a cig outside. Was previously phoned by a friend to look out for them as he and his dad saw them on there way home from work. The two objects disapeared but one first changed direction and shot up into the sky. Second event a few hours later at my familys christmas party, again outside in the garden having a cig. This time my brother in-law and his daughter watched as 7-9 objects again moved fast through the sky, heading towards the sea. These did not dissapear but rather moved out of view behind the tops of houses. Apprently earlier someone had set of three chinese lanterns in a near by village. Its possible I suppose but there were no flickering lights and they were moving dam fast and in a sort of formation. Also I have just heard something about the US airforce testing flares or something last night? In Filey? I used to be in the Army and boy, flares have really come on leaps and bounds since then! In my humble opinion they were not flares or lanterns. I have also seen a few months back two white orbs, as bright as venus but again moving at some speed, they to dissapeared. I tried to take a picture of one last night and just caught it, but it is not prove positive regretably. I would like to know who many other people withnessed these objects last night because it was spooky!

Seems they are out in force at the moment over the UK. perhaps they know most people are indoors and less likely to see them?!...
